Suunto wants to make a dent in the sports-watch market with the Spartan Sport

It’s safe to say that there are plenty of sports-oriented smartwatches available now, whether you’re actually into sports or you just want a device to use on a day-to-day basis. Suunto, however, is looking to make a dent in this space, and is adding a new device to the Spartan sports watch lineup it announced last month.

The new watch is called the Spartan Sport, and is being touted as a “strong and sleek multisport GPS watch for athletes.” In other words, this device is one of the growing number that have GPS. The Sport is a cheaper alternative to the Spartan Ultra.

Design played a big part in the creation of this watch, it seems. While the watch is a sports watch, it’s not so chunky that you couldn’t wear it in other situations. Of course, this could also be helpful for when you are doing sports — as Suunto notes, “many athletes prefer a low-profile fit on the wrist over extra-long battery life.”

Of course, that’s not to say that the device has a sub-par battery life. It will most certainly get you through the day, as it lasts 16 hours on a single charge.

Apart from GPS and a 16-hour battery life, the device offers pre-set modes for tracking as many as 80 different activities. It obviously tracks the major sports — running, cycling, swimming, triathlons, and so on, but it also tracks things like skiing. You can also set interval modes for when you’re training using a combination of different sports.

The Sport is aimed at providing accurate fitness tracking through its GPS and accelerometer, however it doesn’t come cheap. The device costs $549, and comes in black, white, blue, and “sakura” (the Japanese word for cherry, used here to mean pink). You can get one for yourself from the Spartan website.

Outdoorsy Honor Watch GS Pro pays homage to G-Shock’s tough watches
honor watch gs pro hands on features price photos release date front

Why did Honor choose to name its latest rugged smartwatch the GS Pro? I’ve not seen any official comment, but the instant I put it on my wrist, it became obvious. The GS moniker must be a subtle homage to Casio’s G-Shock range, right? After all, this is an oversize watch that will withstand a bit of a beating, comes in a variety of colors, and doesn’t fit under my shirt cuff. Sounds very G-Shock to me.

I’ve spent a couple of days wearing the Watch GS Pro to see if it deserves to take up my valuable wrist real estate
Design
Don’t even think about putting the Watch GS Pro on if you have small wrists, or don’t like big watches. It’s seriously large. The case measures 48mm and is a good 15mm thick, while the weight with the strap is 77 grams. Put it up against a G-Shock GA-700 watch and, due to the difference in the way the screen size is measured, the G-Shock’s 57mm case is pretty much identical in size -- and about the same weight too. The thick fluoroelastomer strap may look as if it’s integrated into the lugs, but it’s actually removable. It feels very strong and extremely comfortable, and is soft and pliable straight out of the box.

The OnePlus 13 is coming on January 7 — along with a surprise
The OnePlus logo on the back of the OnePlus Open Apex Edition.

It's official: the OnePlus 13 will launch on January 7, 2025. Preempting the anticipated event by several weeks, OnePlus has officially confirmed the date we’ll see its next major smartphone release outside of China. Additionally, it has revealed some key features and news of a surprise new launch to go along with the phone.

OnePlus will release the OnePlus 13 in three different colors — Black Eclipse, Arctic Dawn, and Midnight Ocean. It’s the latter that is likely to be the model to have, as it is wrapped in a material called micro-fiber vegan leather, which is apparently corrosion and scratch-resistant but still luxurious to the touch. For the Arctic Dawn phone, the glass will have a special coating to give it a silky-smooth finish. It’s likely these are the same colors offered in China, where the phone has already been announced, just with different names.

I’m really worried about the future of smart glasses
The front of the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.

The Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses are among the most interesting, unexpectedly fun, and surprisingly useful wearables I’ve used in 2024. However, as we go into 2025, I’m getting worried about the smart glasses situation.

This isn’t the first time I’ve felt like we’re on the cusp of a new wave of cool smart eyewear products, only to be very disappointed by what came next.
Why the Ray-Ban Meta are so good
