'Halo 5's player count is the highest in the series since 'Halo 3'

Halo 5: Guardians released in October to a fairly positive reception, though common criticisms were aimed at the shooter’s lackluster narrative and lack of local split-screen cooperative and competitive modes. However, the multiplayer was a massive return to form for a series that seemed to be suffering from a bit of an identity crisis, and 343’s work seems to have paid off. Halo 5 has more active players than any Halo installment released this decade.

In a Reddit thread initially spotted by IGN, 343 Industries community manager Andy Dudynsky told fans they would be “pleasantly surprised” by the current player count in Halo 5. While he didn’t give a specific figure, Dudynsky says that this is not limited to the “free play” days that Microsoft recently offered for the game. In fact, the game has actually seen a rise in player count over the past few months, with June standing as the best one in recent memory.

“This isn’t something we’ve talked about yet, but I am rather happy to share that even before the free play period, Halo 5 has had the highest monthly active players for a Halo title since Halo 3,” Dudynsky adds.

Given the legendary drop in users that Halo 4 faced just a month after it released, this is especially good news. Halo 5 is the only Xbox One-exclusive game in the series, and the woeful launch of The Master Chief Collection almost certainly kept some players from picking up the latest installment.

But Halo 5 won’t be the only Halo game on the Xbox One for much longer. Halo Wars 2 releases early next year as the long-awaited follow-up to Ensemble Studio’s real-time strategy game. During the beta period, which began during E3 and ran until June 22, players logged 1.2 million hours and vanquished more than 80,000,000 enemies.

Baldur’s Gate 3 drops Series S splitscreen support to release on Xbox in 2023

Larian Studios promises to release Baldur's Gate 3 on Xbox Series X/S later this year after pushing the game back because of performance problems on Xbox Series S.
Baldur's Gate 3 is available now on PC and will come out for PS5 on September 6, but an Xbox Series X/S version won't be available for a little bit longer. In a July 2023 community update, developer Larian Studios explained that this is because it needed "to ensure that the game is performing without compromise across the entire Xbox X/S ecosystem, in multiplayer and with split-screen. The Xbox Series X version was running fine, but the Xbox Series S version of the game was struggling a lot more. The Xbox versions of Baldur's Gate 3 didn't have a release window until now, when Larian Studios co-founder Swen Vincke took to X to confirm it'd come to Xbox platforms before the end of the year. That said, it will exclude one notable feature.
"Super happy to confirm that after meeting [Phil Spencer] yesterday, we’ve found a solution that allows us to bring Baldur’s Gate 3 to Xbox players this year still, something we’ve been working towards for quite some time," Vincke wrote. "All improvements will be there, with split-screen coop on Series X. Series S will not feature split-screen co-op, but will also include cross-save progression between Steam and Xbox Series."
Thankfully, it looks like Xbox players won't have to wait too much longer to play this excellent game, but it will be one of the first games to notably drop a major feature between the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S versions. This follows comments by Head of Xbox Phil Spencer where he said he doesn't believe Microsoft will drop support for Xbox Series S in the foreseeable future. "I want to make sure games are available on both, that's our job as a platform holder and we're committed to that with our partners," Spencer told Eurogamer. "And I think we're gonna get there with Larian. So I'm not overly worried about that, but we've learned some stuff through it. Having an entry-level price point for console, sub-$300, is a good thing for the industry."

Perfect Dark has been ‘wholly reworked’ in Unreal Engine 5 since its announcement
Joanna shoots in Perfect Dark artwork.

The rampant issues that the development of Xbox's Perfect Dark reboot from The Initiative has faced over the past several years were detailed in a new report on IGN. The report also claims that the game is still two to three years away from release, as development essentially restarted on Unreal Engine 5 in 2021.

Microsoft formed The Initiative in 2018 and announced its Perfect Dark reboot in 2020, but IGN's report states that most of the work done on the project before 2021 is no longer in use. The Initiative's ambition to become the stewards of the Perfect Dark franchise and make a self-proclaimed "AAAA" game without very clear high-level direction reportedly plagued the project in its early years, as did a rocky co-development relationship with developer Certain Affinity. The COVID-19 pandemic reportedly exacerbated all those problems, and The Initiative and Certain Affinity ended their partnership in early 2021, just months after the game's reveal.

Basim perched on a ledge overlooking Baghdad

In a company interview with CEO Yves Guillemot posted on the Ubisoft website Thursday, the executive reveals that there are remakes of Assassin's Creed games in the works, although he doesn't specify which ones.

"Players can be excited about some remakes, which will allow us to revisit some of the games we've created in the past and modernize them," he says, implying that it could pertain to games made before Odyssey. "There are worlds in some of our older Assassin's Creed games that are still extremely rich."
