Star Trek 4 gets green light; Chris Hemsworth to return as Kirk’s father

When your subject matter is exploring the vast and unknown universe, you’re not exactly going to be hurting for new ideas or material. It’s no surprise then that the Starship Enterprise will soon embark on yet another adventure, continuing its mandate to “boldly go where no man has gone before.”

As reported by Deadline on Monday, Paramount Pictures is moving forward on a fourth installment of the new-age Star Trek franchisee, and it looks like the crew will be traveling through time yet again.

The new film will reportedly see Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) cross paths with his father, who died in a courageous act of self-sacrifice just as his son was being born. The elder Kirk will be played Chris Hemsworth, who also appeared in the first installment of the latest set of films.

The Australian-born actor was much less well-known back then, but has since blossomed into a major movie star capable of carrying a film. Since Kirk is always struggling to live up to his father’s name and make his own mark on the universe, it makes sense to have an actor who rivals Pine’s star power in the role. It should be an interesting (if not a bit contentious) dynamic between father and son.

J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay will write the screenplay, and J.J. Abrams is set to return as a producer — but that’s about all we know. There has been no word yet on who will direct the film or when it will debut in theaters.

Unknowns aside, the first two installments of the franchise were a hit with audiences and critics alike, and early reviews of the third film — Star Trek Beyond, which opens in theaters Friday — are very solid. Looks like it’s warp speed ahead for the crew of the Enterprise.

How do I get into Star Trek? A guide to how to watch the beloved sci-fi franchise
The cast of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Few science fiction franchises have made as enormous a cultural impact as Star Trek. Trek’s language and visual iconography, from “warp speed” to your phone’s built-in “live long and prosper” emoji, are ubiquitous even to people who have never seen the show. It’s the original organized “geek culture” fandom, and the birthplace of fan fiction and cosplay as we know it. The stigma of Trekkies as unwashed, socially awkward outcasts has dissipated as sci-fi and comics culture has gone mainstream, but Star Trek itself can still be intimidating to outsiders due to its massive scale and dense mythology of more than 800 episodes and films.
Though it’s possible to explore the Star Trek universe on your own, it is best navigated with the aid of a guide. And, if you don’t happen to have a Trekkie in your life to chart your course with you (which they absolutely love to do), we’re here to offer three options as to how to get started, depending on how you like to digest stories.
