Produced by celebrated Japanese studio Toho Pictures, Resurgence now has its first full-length trailer promoting the world-famous monster’s homecoming.
Rather than go the standard trailer route, the preview of Godzilla: Resurgence opts for a dialogue-free presentation of the havoc that the giant monster wreaks on Tokyo, as well as the damage it does to the people who live there and those responsible for their safety.
Godzilla: Resurgence was co-directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, who are best known for their work on the animated Neon Genesis Evangelion movies and the live-action Attack on Titan movies, respectively. The script was penned by Anno, with Higuchi supervising the visual effects.
Although the plot of the film is the standard, city-destroying monster disaster story, Higuchi indicated that the film will diverge from the campier recent Godzilla movies and explore the effects of such a monster’s rampage on a world where terrorist attacks and other devastating events have taken away so much of humanity’s innocence.
“In movie after movie, people merely ran away from the stampeding monster, and no one tried to face up to the issue of accountability,” he told ABC News last year.
Godzilla: Resurgence is the first Godzilla movie produced by Toho since 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars. The film hits theaters in Japan on July 29, and elsewhere in the following weeks. There’s no U.S. release date for the film at this point.
