It’s an accepted fact of virtual reality, that nobody looks cool doing it. You can feel like a digital god when the headset is on, but the rest of the world just sees you flailing around with some plastic sticks in your hand. Fortunately there is a way to add a bit of style to your VR experience, by buying the new Dota 2 special edition HTC Vive headset.
Priced at $800 just like the regular version, there isn’t a whole lot that’s particularly special about this HTC Vive, but it does come equipped with a fancy red head strap that features a logo for The International. There’s also a Dota 2 logo which – if you’ve seated the headset right – should sit right on the ridge at the back of your head.
Currently up for sale on the International’s ‘Secret Shop’ within the Valve WeLoveFine store, the headset with unique head band is likely only available in a select number, though we aren’t privy to what that total is. It would probably make sense to jump on this quickly if you fancy it.
However it does get us thinking that this probably won’t (and shouldn’t) be the last aesthetic option for VR users. Early adopters have been adding googly eyes to HMDs since the days of the Oculus Rift DK1, so it must only be a matter of time before someone creates a skin for the Vive, or a new cloth covering for the Rift.
There are some customization options for the Vive and Rift out already, though they aren’t to do with aesthetics. VRCover has been offering washable faceplates and covers since both mainstream headsets were released, so if you find your VR headset getting a little too sweaty, there’s a good solution already available.
