‘No Man’s Sky’ could be transformed by the power of the PS4 Neo

The PlayStation 4 is a powerful console and No Man’s Sky is a hugely ambitious game, but if you were to play the latter on a PS4 Neo for example, the noticeable jump in performance could make it a “fundamentally different game,” according to director at Hello Games, Sean Murray.

While speaking with British Red Top, the Daily Star (warning, some NSFW images), Murray didn’t go so far as to say that No Man’s Sky would play completely differently when the PS4 Neo is eventually released, but he did say that it has the potential to really leverage new hardware in a different way to most games.

“If you play another game and if they do a remaster of that game, what they will do is up-res the textures and things like that,” Muray said.

“That’s because the base geometry, the base shape of the world, the way of playing is totally like lost, basically. Hundreds of people have worked on it thousands of hours to create what you see.

“For our game (No Man’s Sky) it’s procedurally generated. So more powerful hardware doesn’t just mean upgraded textures or a higher frame rate. It means we can fundamentally change the experience.”

Essentially what he’s talking about is something much more familiar to PC gamers. If you have a more powerful graphics card, your experience is quite different to that of someone with much weaker hardware. That’s the kind of difference we could potentially see with No Man’s Sky when Neo is released.

Although the method of action is quite different, it’s also not too dissimilar to what we’ve seen in the modding scene over the years. A quick look at a game like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, will show you that with some aftermarket downloads, you can make it look far better looking than was ever possible when it was initially created.

Increased foliage density, increased flora variety, and more active environments should all be possible with new PS4 hardware. Murray claims it could make the worlds you visit feel much more immersive, too.

You have to wonder in fact if this is something that No Man’s Sky has already made possible on the PC version of the game — set for release on August 12 — since that generally has improved graphical settings compared to its console counterparts.

Regardless of what it might be in the future though, No Man’s Sky is very pretty right now. How are you guys finding it so far?

No Man’s Sky 4.0’s difficulty options make the space game feel new again

You’d think space was the final frontier, but 2016’s spacefaring exploration sim No Man’s Sky seems to keep finding new ways to expand and improve its eye-watering collection of features. What began as a quiet trek through a galaxy comprised of over 18 quintillion lonely planets is now a far more comprehensive game with a more sophisticated suite of gameplay options, including frontier towns to run, outlaw space systems to smuggle goods through, multiplayer missions to complete alongside your friends, and a fully-fledged story campaign to follow at your own leisurely pace.

It’s also recently been updated to its fourth major iteration as of October 7. That’s when developer Hello Games unleashed the 4.0 update, also known as the Waypoint update, coinciding with the long-awaited Nintendo Switch release. As a result of the 4.0 update, long-term No Man’s Sky fans were once again treated to an impressive array of improvements, including boosts to visual fidelity, better legibility within menus, and a noteworthy overhaul to inventory management that also left some players momentarily disheartened.

Spaceship in No Man's Sky.

Hello Games is releasing No Man's Sky version 4.0 alongside the Nintendo Switch release, and it will include a new "Relaxed" mode, making it less overwhelming for returning players.

This mode, according to a report from PC Gamer, still offers the general sandbox experience, but with less of an emphasis on survival. Relaxed mode will also allow players to continue a previous save or start a new one from scratch. The new mode falls somewhere between standard Survival and Creative, allowing newcomers and longtime players to enjoy various new features without having to grind as much to do so.

Team Cherry confirmed that the highly anticipated Hollow Knight: Silksong will be on two more platforms at launch: PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
The official PlayStation Twitter account revealed the news this morning, adding PS4 and PS5 to a list of Hollow Knight: Silksong platforms that include PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Hollow Knight: Silksong is a sequel to Hollow Knight, one of the most critically acclaimed Metroidvania games of the past decade. Hollow Knight: Silksong follows Hornet, a character from the first game, as she explores the unfamiliar world of Pharloom. When Team Cherry announced the indie in February 2019, it only confirmed that the game was in development for PC, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch.
The game went MIA after an appearance at E3 2019, only for it to triumphantly reemerge as one of the first announcements of the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase in June 2022. Although we know that Hollow Knight: Silksong will be available through Xbox Game Pass on PC and Xbox platforms, it's good to know that those who prefer to try the game on Nintendo Switch or PlayStation will still have access to the game on day one.
Unfortunately, this PlayStation announcement did not come alongside a new trailer or release date confirmation, so Hollow Knight fans are still left eagerly awaiting its follow-up. Microsoft did claim that every game in its June showcase was "targeted to launch in the next 12 months," though, so it's very possible that Hollow Knight: Silksong will be released for PC, Mac, Linux, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in the first half of 2023.
