Henry Cavill teases a new Superman costume for ‘Justice League’

Even though Suicide Squad wasn’t exactly the shot in the arm many were hoping for, the DC cinematic universe marches on. Production on next year’s Justice League is already well underway, and Henry Cavill is teasing a major costume change for his superhero alter ego.

Of course, anyone that’s seen Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will remember that Superman was killed off at the end of the movie. Cavill’s tease reinforces the idea that the character will be reanimated and inducted into the Justice League, and hints at the comic book storyline that’s being used as inspiration.

The Death and Return of Superman was a comic book arc from 1992 that saw the Man of Steel die at the hands of Doomsday. When the hero made his inevitable return to the land of the living, he had ditched his classic costume for a sleek black and silver outfit.

These are the threads that Cavill was referencing in an Instagram post from August 15, according to a report from io9. The actor posted a zoomed-in photograph of what seems to be a jet-black Superman suit, presumably the costume that he will wear in Justice League.

That being said, it’s possible that Cavill is just baiting fans with a grayscale filter applied to a photograph of his standard suit. He’s obviously well aware of the black suit’s relevance to the character’s hardcore fan base, so whether it appears in the movie or not, it seems likely that The Death and Return of Superman will continue to be a major inspiration.

Justice League is set to open on November 17, 2017, and will star Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, and Gal Gadot. The next entry in DC’s growing cinematic universe is Wonder Woman, which will debut a few months earlier on June 2, 2017.

The Joker standing on a street corner in "The Dark Knight."

Superhero movies often excel at making a grand entrance, hooking the audience within the first few minutes. They do so with some spectacular action scenes or just some thrilling or emotional moments that get viewers interested in seeing what's in store for them.

From the first Guardians of the Galaxy's giddy dance number to the brutal assassination of The Comedian in Watchmen, here's a list of the 10 best opening scenes in superhero movies.
10. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice - Opening Scene (2016)
Zack Snyder's crossover epic begins with Bruce Wayne recounting a dream he had about the death of his parents. This sequence juxtaposes Thomas and Martha's murders with Bruce's fall into a bat-filled cave, symbolizing his descent into grief following this tragedy. Each frame of this beautiful scene looks like a panel from an actual comic book, and the somber song that plays in this scene captures the loss of Bruce's innocence at the hands of a random criminal.
And with the swarm of bats carrying him into the light, audiences see his rise out of that darkness as Batman. But this proves to be a brief glimmer of hope, as the film later shows how far the Dark Knight has fallen after facing so much tragedy and heartbreak in the pursuit of this "beautiful lie."

5 scrapped ideas for DC’s Snyderverse that are better off canceled
Ares, Artemis, and Zeus in ancient Earth in "Zack Snyder's Justice League."

With the cancellation of Zack Snyder's planned story for the DC Extended Universe, many details about what could've been have come to light in recent years. The "Snyderverse," as fans have dubbed it, was supposed to include a solo film for Ben Affleck's Batman and two more sequels to Justice League, culminating in a final battle between the heroes of Earth and the evil god Darkseid.

Many ideas for the Snyderverse sound very thrilling and make fans wish they were never scrapped, but there are some that were arguably better off left on the cutting room floor.
