Ubisoft buys ‘2048’ creator Ketchapp, expanding mobile market presence

Publisher Ubisoft has purchased casual games studio Ketchapp, creator of the popular Threes clone 2048 and other hit mobile apps.

By the company’s own estimation, the purchase makes Ubisoft the fourth largest mobile games publisher in the world, when judged by the total number of downloads across all of its owned and published mobile titles.

Founded in 2014, Ketchapp fills the casual gaming niche on the iOS App Store and Google Play with mobile apps like Jelly Jump, ZigZag, and Gravity Switch. The studio produces new games frequently, and many feature simple pick-up-and-play mechanics aimed at casual players.

Ketchapp earned a degree of notoriety when it released a clone of the popular tile-sliding puzzler Threes in 2014. Ketchapp’s own take on the concept, 2048, dialed back its difficulty significantly and was released as a free browser game, winning it a large fan following despite protests from Threes studio Sirvo.

Ketchapp continued to clone popular mobile apps and game concepts in the months afterward, leading to the release of titles like the Flappy Bird spoof Run Bird Run and the Monument Valley-inspired Skyward.

Ubisoft’s Ketchapp purchase arrives as the publisher attempts to fend off a hostile takeover from French media conglomerate Vivendi. Vivendi previously purchased the Ubisoft-owned mobile studio Gameloft, and it’s likely that this week’s Ketchapp acquisition was a strategic move intended to bolster Ubisoft’s financial standing while reestablishing its foothold in the mobile games marketplace.

“With Ketchapp, Ubisoft acquires a highly profitable publisher with a successful portfolio of free-to-play games for mobile,” Ubisoft Mobile executive director Jean-Michel Detoc stated this week. “This acquisition gives Ubisoft one of the world’s leading mobile game publishers and reinforces our advertising capabilities in mobile gaming.”

Developers negatively impacted by 2048 and other Ketchapp clones don’t share Detoc’s enthusiasm, however.

“I have mixed feelings about this, obviously,” Threes designer Asher Vollmer stated in response to this week’s Ketchapp buyout. “But Ketchapp releases a tiny mobile game a week, which fills a Very Real Need people have.”

Vollmer continued: “It’d be cool if their games were mechanically & ethically higher quality tho.”

Tomb Raider returns as a mobile roguelike via Netflix
tomb raider reloaded release date

Tomb Raider Reloaded, a roguelike mobile game based on Crystal Dynamics' long-running series, has been unveiled ahead of its release on iOS, Android, and Netflix on February 14.
Tomb Raider Reloaded is Coming Soon - Register Now!
Tomb Raider Reloaded is a top-down action game where players control Lara Croft. She'll go from room to room, defeating enemies and solving puzzles in each one. In typical roguelike fashion, Croft will get more powerful over time as players level up, obtain XP modifiers, find stat-boosting Runes and Perks, and craft weapons and outfits. Lara will be voiced by Keeley Hawes, who portrayed her in games like Tomb Raider: Anniversary and Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, rather than Camilla Luddington, who played Lara Croft in Crystal Dynamics' rebooted trilogy.
This announcement comes on the heels of Amazon making a large investment in the Tomb Raider franchise. Amazon Game Studios will publish the Unreal Engine 5-powered Tomb Raider game in development at Crystal Dynamics and is developing TV shows and movies connected to the game. Amazon is not involved with the release of this mobile game, though, as developer Emerald City Games and Embracer Group-owned publisher CDE Entertainment are handling it. Regardless, 2023 has been the busiest year for Lara Croft in a while.
The game will be available normally on iOS and Android, but Netflix subscribers can also download a version of the game that doesn't have any in-game ads or microtransactions. The release of Tomb Raider Reloaded will come right on the heels of the launch of Valiant Hearts: Coming Home, another Netflix mobile game based on a notable console game.

Avatar: Generations reemerges with new release window, preregistration
Team Avatar from Avatar: The Last Airbender leaping through the air in Avatar: Generations key art.

Free-to-play Avatar: The Last Airbender mobile RPG Avatar: Generations has reemerged under a new publisher, as the game now has an early 2023 release window and is available for pre-registration on Android.
Avatar: Generations is a turned-based RPG like Marvel Strike Force or Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes that lets fans play through the stories of various Team Avatars. At launch, the focus is on Avatar: The Last Airbender's story, although the press release for this announcement teased that Avatar: Generations will eventually get updates that feature The Legend of Korra stories and characters, as well as never-before-seen Avatars.
Avatar Generations - Official Gameplay Trailer - Coming Soon to Mobile!
As players progress through the game, they will collect various heroes and companions based on characters from the franchise, and then upgrade those characters and build a squad that's best fit to complete a given level. Those who pre-register for the game will receive hero Avatar Aang and companion Appa free of charge. Although it's not the AAA console game Avatar: The Last Airbender fans are yearning for, Avatar: Generations is shaping up to be the most thorough Avatar game yet.
Interestingly, this announcement also confirms that Avatar: Generations publisher is now Crystal Dynamics -- Eidos Entertainment, a subsidiary of Embracer Group. Avatar: Generations was initially announced by Square Enix last year, but it appears that the Square Enix London Mobile team that was handling the game was part of Square Enix's western studio sale to Embracer Group last summer.
Even though Embracer Group shut down Onoma, a mobile studio it acquired from Square Enix, it still seems interested in Avatar: Generations, likely due to its existing relationship with Nickelodeon and the fact that Avatar: The Last Airbender is a well-known IP. Avatar: Generations is developed by Navigator Games.
Avatar: Generations will launch on iOS and Android in early 2023.

Marvel Snap’s Winterverse event introduces new cards, variants, and more
Marvel Snap art highlights Winterverse variants for Rogue, Ebony Maw, Patriot, and Rockslide.

The latest Marvel Snap update kicks off the Winterverse event, bringing many holiday-themed variants and brand-new cards to the mobile card game.
The two new cards coming to Marvel Snap this week are Darkhawk and Sentry. Darkhawk is a superhero who first emerged in the 1990s and has a techno-organic body with glider wings. In Marvel Snap, he's a 4-Cost, 1-Power Ongoing card that gives +2 Power for each card in the deck of your opponent.
Meanwhile, Sentry is a hero that was introduced in 2000 that has Superman-like abilities, but is connected to an evil entity called the Void that's just as powerful. In-game, that translates to Sentry being a 4-Cost On Reveal card with 8-Power that can't be played at the right location, as playing Sentry will cast a -8 power Void card there.

We don't know if Sentry and Darkhawk are Series 3, Series 4, or Series 5 cards yet. It will take some time for Marvel Snap's meta to evolve and really prove whether or not Darkhawk and Sentry are all that useful, but they do both have interesting abilities. Regardless, keep an eye out for them in Collector's Reserves and in the Token Shop.
They're not the only part of the Winterverse event, though. From December 20 until January 2, Second Dinner is giving away in-game awards for logging in each day. These range from 100 credits to a special Nick Fury card variant featuring Samuel L. Jackson's signature. Five new winter-themed card variants will also start to show up in the shop and Collector's Reserves. You can now find Winterverse cards for Abomination, Ebony Maw, Patriot, Rockslide, and Rogue.
A Winterverse bundle that includes a Sunspot Winterverse Variant, Avatar, 2000 Collector's Tokens, 8000 credits, 100 Sunspot Boosters, and a "Tacos After This?" title will be added to the shop in the coming days as well.
Marvel Snap is available now for iOS, Android, and PC, and it even made Digital Trends' best games of 2022 list.
