Walt Disney Pictures released the first teaser for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales during Sunday night’s season finale of Fear the Walking Dead. Although the brief peek at the upcoming film doesn’t feature an appearance by Johnny Depp’s pirate alter ego, Jack Sparrow still ends up being the focus of the preview — much as he’s been for the four films leading up to this one.
Directed by Kon-Tiki filmmakers Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning (collectively known as “Roenberg”), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales sends Depp’s hard-luck pirate Jack Sparrow on a quest to find the magical Trident of Poseidon after a group of undead pirates emerge from the Devil’s Triangle and vow to kill every pirate they encounter while searching for (surprise!) Sparrow. Leading the undead pirates is Sparrow’s old rival, Captain Salazar, played by Javier Bardem.
Joining Depp and Bardem in the cast are returning franchise actors Orlando Bloom as Will Turner and Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbosa. They’re joined by Maleficent and The Giver actor Brenton Thwaites as Henry and The Maze Runner actress Kaya Scodelario as Carina Smyth. Paul McCartney will also have an unidentified role in the film.
The film is based on a script penned by Rush Hour 3 and Catch Me If You Can screenwriter Jeff Nathanson.
Across the four films released so far, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has earned $1.2 billion domestically and $3.7 billion worldwide. The last installment of the franchise, 2011’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, earned $241 million in U.S. theaters and $1 billion worldwide.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will arrive in theaters May 26, 2017.
