AmazonFresh just got a bit cheaper, so start ordering your groceries online

Buying your groceries from Amazon just got a lot cheaper and as a result, perhaps easier as well. The online retail giant began making its way into produce a few years ago, challenging supermarkets and local grocery stores with the relentless rise of eCommerce. But there was one major objection to the company’s AmazonFresh delivery service — it was very expensive. With a $299 yearly subscription fee required upfront, it came as little surprise that consumers were less than thrilled by the notion of going to Amazon for their groceries. But now, the internet firm has significantly rolled back this price, and if you’re a Prime member, you can add AmazonFresh for $15 a month to your existing membership.

This is nearly half as expensive as the original cost, as a whole year’s subscription (billed monthly) would cost Prime users $180 on top of their existing membership. “Existing annual Prime Fresh members will be charged $99 for their annual Prime membership and $15 each month for Fresh upon your renewal date,” Amazon said in an announcement of its own. Altogether, that means you’re paying just under $280, still about $20 less than you previously would have for AmazonFresh.

But what if you’re already paying the steep fees for AmazonFresh? An Amazon spokesperson clarified, “Customers who currently have an annual Prime Fresh membership will be moved to the $15 Prime monthly Add-on plan upon their renewal date. If a customer would like to move to the monthly plan prior to their renewal date, they can contact customer service to cancel their existing Prime Fresh membership and sign up for the new monthly add-on plan. They will be refunded the remaining amount of their existing plan in a pro-rated basis.”

While the delivery service isn’t available everywhere, folks who live in metropolitan areas serviced by AmazonFresh “can shop for groceries, everyday essentials, favorites from local shops and restaurants, and more.” In the last few years, AmazonFresh has made its way into San Francisco, New York, Boston, Baltimore, and London.
