It’s all motorcycle action and crotch shots in bawdy first trailer for ‘CHiPs’

Exclusive World Premiere CHIPs Trailer
At this point, every television show that has enjoyed some success over the years is a likely target for Hollywood’s nostalgia-fueled, “R”-rated comedy machine, so it’s no surprise that the first trailer for CHiPs — based on the lighthearted crime series that premiered in 1977 — arrived this week.

And while the film doesn’t look nearly as funny as the surprisingly good 21 Jump Street movie adaptation, the trailer does have some funny moments — and a lot of jokes about (and close-up shots of) Dax Shepard’s crotch.

Written and directed by Shepard (IdiocracyParenthood), the film casts Ant-Man and End of Watch actor Michael Peña alongside Shepard as a pair of California Highway Patrol officers from very different backgrounds who find themselves caught up in a dangerous case involving corrupt cops and a multimillion dollar heist. Shepard plays Jon Baker, a former pro motocross biker, while Peña plays Frank “Ponch” Poncherello, a federal agent who goes undercover with the CHP to investigate the case.

The film is based on the CHiPs television series that aired for six seasons from 1977 to 1983, and starred Larry Wilcox as Baker and Erik Estrada and Poncherello. The series ran for 139 episodes and one reunion movie.

Unlike the series that inspired it, which was a fairly lighthearted police sitcom that rarely featured its stars drawing their weapons, the CHiPs movie appears to be a raunchy, explosive adventure in the vein of the aforementioned 21 Jump Street movie franchise.

The film co-stars Rosa Salazar (The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials), Adam Brody (The O.C.), Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars), and Vincent D’Onofrio (Daredevil).

CHiPs hits theaters March 24.

3 underrated (HBO) Max movies you should watch this weekend (June 28-30)
A girl looks at a boy in House at the End of the Street.

June is surprisingly over, and with it, a great month for movies comes to a satisfactory close. You've probably watched Inside Out 2 or Bad Boys: Ride or Die or maybe even The Bikeriders. From blockbusters to indie fare, the theatrical movie business has been robust and healthy.

The same goes for streaming. Netflix had a big hit with Richard Linklater's Hit Man, while Amazon Prime Video recently premiered the latest bonkers season of The Boys. HBO and Max have been quieter, but their robust library speaks volumes to the streamer's high quality. The following three films are older, but are just as worth your time as new hits like House of the Dragon season 2.

The best Netflix original series right now
Eric and Benedict Cumberbatch in Eric.

The era of Peak TV was also Peak Netflix, because the streamer seemingly had an endless supply of new original series. So far in 2024, that hasn't been the case. Whether we'll ever get the same level of content again seems unlikely for now. But even in a reduced capacity, Netflix still has a few new additions to its lineup of originals.

For the month of June, we're adding the '80s-set thriller, Eric, which stars Benedict Cumbebatch. Our other pick for the month is Supacell, which is Netflix's new British series that remixes some old superhero archetypes. That's not a very big selection for fans who always want something new, but this roundup of the best Netflix original series really does have all of the top options in one place for you. All you have to do is scroll down and make time to binge watch some shows.
