‘The Ringed City,’ the final DLC for ‘Dark Souls III,’ arrives in March

Dark Souls III: The Ringed City DLC Announcement Trailer | PS4, XB1, PC
All good things must come to an end, and in the case of Dark Souls III, that end is only a few months away. The game’s final expansion, The Ringed City, arrives this March, and it will take you into the “literal end of the world.” If we didn’t know the Dark Souls saga was concluding, we’d feel fine.

The Ringed City sees the “lands converge upon themselves” following the end of the Age of Fire — a period that set the stage for nearly every event and encounter in the rest of the series. Players must chase after Slave Knight Gael in a search for the “Dark Soul of Humanity.” Gael was first seen in the Dark Souls III expansion Ashes of Ariandel, so it’s definitely advised to play it before moving forward with The Ringed City.

The expansion takes players into a land that is far past the point of destruction — as seen in the announcement trailer the buildings are quite literally converging on themselves, almost like they’re being swallowed by the ground below, and plenty of monstrous creatures look ready to put a premature end to any hero’s heroic plan. The most frightening of these is a flame-covered, Pterodactyl-like creature that can fire several fireballs in quick succession. Its scream is also the stuff of nightmares.

In addition to the new location and characters, The Ringed City also adds new weapons, armor, and magical abilities to help players on their journey. Of course, there’s no substitute for lightning-quick reflexes and a little bit of luck, both of which are necessities to beat any Dark Souls III boss.

Dark Souls III: The Ringed City will release on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on March 28 for $15. If you haven’t yet played Ashes of Ariandel, it is included in the season pass for $25.

Hyper Light Breaker is a colorful mix between Risk of Rain and Dark Souls
An enemy in Hyper Light Breaker.

One thing I’ve always appreciated about gaming is the iterative nature of the industry. When one game cracks a good idea, it tends to trickle down to others in creative ways. There’s a sense that developers are always in conversation with one another, riffing off of each other’s ideas in search of something that feels truly fresh.

That idea is on display all over this year’s Game Developers Conference, but it's especially apparent in Hyper Light Breaker. The upcoming title from Heart Machine, which I demoed at this year’s GDC, pulls clear inspiration from several games, touching on everything from Risk of Rain to Dark Souls. It sounds like a hodge-podge of ideas on paper, but every design inspiration comes together to form something distinct: a neon-soaked action game that neatly fits in the same lineage as Hyper Light Drifter and Solar Ash.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree finally arrives this June
A furnace golem looms in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.

We finally got our first full look at Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, the expansion for FromSoftware's critically acclaimed 2022 open-world game. Thankfully, we don't have to wait too much longer for it, as publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment confirmed a June 21 release date.

The Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree trailer is full of gameplay, showing the new area that players can explore, many different bosses and combat encounters, and some awesome new weapons. Standouts include a boss that's a giant burning wicker man, a large hippo-like creature that can grow sparks out of its body, and a powerful-looking flaming crossbow weapon. The trailer also shows the player dying many times, so it looks like Shadow of the Erdtree will feature a lot more of the satisfying, yet difficult gameplay loop that the original offered.

Even if you love Dark Souls, you’re not ready for FromSoftware’s next game
A combat encounter in Armored Core 6

I’m going to bet that a good chunk of people reading this have never played an Armored Core game. I’d be willing to bet most haven’t even heard of Armored Core, and if they have, it’s simply that “one series FromSoftware made before Dark Souls.” And if you have played Armored Core, you don’t need me to tell you what’s in store for Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon.

I’m talking to everyone else -- the ones who dabbled in Dark Souls, love Bloodborne, and tore through Elden Ring. I can tell you with confidence that you’re not ready for Armored Core VI. No, this isn’t Dark Souls with mechs, and for as much as FromSoftware has iterated on the core design with its now decade hiatus from the series, this is still very much an Armored Core game.
