Netflix releases trailer for English-language adaptation of 'Death Note'

Death Note | Teaser [HD] | Netflix
It’s taken almost a decade for an English-language, live-action adaptation of Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s acclaimed manga series Death Note to make it to the screen, but Netflix has finally released the first look at the upcoming film.

In the new teaser trailer for Death Note, we’re shown the titular book that holds the power of life and death dropped into the hands of an unsuspecting high-school student played by Nat Wolff (Paper Towns, The Fault in Our Stars). The trailer then shifts to a montage of scenes from the movie depicting the cat-and-mouse game that ensues once bodies start piling up, and closes with a scene teasing the supernatural entity at the heart of all the chaos.

He then embarks on a mission to rid the world of anyone he deems unworthy of life, and in doing so, attracts the attention of the authorities and an eccentric investigative genius who challenges him in a tense battle of wits to determine the fate of the world.

Along with Wolff, the cast features

actor Willem Dafoe as the voice of Ryuk, as well Margaret Qualley (

) as Mia Sutton, Keith Stanfield (

The Death Note manga series sold more than 30 million copies as of 2015, and was adapted into an acclaimed 37-episode anime series, as well as a trilogy of Japanese-language, live-action movies that had brief theatrical releases in North America. The series has also been adapted into video games, novels, and a 2015 stage musical.

Wingard’s live-action Death Note movie will premiere August 25 on Netflix.

Netflix debuts first trailer for Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon
Jimmy the Robot Knight in "Rebel Moon."

In the early 1980s, one of the first responses to Star Wars was a legion of low-budget imitators, including the Roger Corman-produced film Battle Beyond the Stars. Director Zack Snyder has made no secret of the fact that Rebel Moon was originally his pitch for a Star Wars movie before Disney purchased Lucasfilm. And the early story elements from this film also seemed to lift some of the plot from Battle Beyond the Stars. But now that the first teaser trailer for the flick has arrived, it's showing even more Star Wars influence than we expected, including a look at glowing blue and red swords that shamelessly resemble lightsabers.

K-pop meets horror in Netflix’s trailer for Mask Girl
The two faces of Mask Girl.

If you don't know who Mask Girl is yet, then you're about to find out. Thanks to the success of Squid Game and other shows, more South Korean series are heading to Netflix this year, including Mask Girl. This show is based on Mae Mi's Mask Girl webcomic, and it follows a woman named Kim Mo-Mi through three different periods in her life. K-pop singer and actress Nana headlines the series as the young Kim Mo-mi, whose natural face remains hidden in the trailer below. Mo-Mi always felt self-conscious about her looks, which is why she adopted her Mask Girl persona and hid her face behind a mask. After plastic surgery, Mo-Mi is stunningly beautiful, but for currently unrevealed reasons, Mo-Mi's alter ego is apparently a murderer who has blood on her hands.

Netflix’s The Chosen One trailer brings forth the Messiah
Bobby Luhnow in The Chosen One.

Imagine growing up as an ordinary child only to discover that you are the long-promised Messiah and the second coming of Jesus Christ. That was the premise of Mark Millar and artist Peter Gross' 2004 comic book series, American Jesus. Later this month, Netflix is premiering the comic's TV series adaptation, which has been renamed The Chosen One. This show is taking some liberties with the original comic by transplanting the story into Mexico and the series itself will largely be in Spanish. But the heart of the story remains, as a young boy named Jodie (Bobby Luhnow) learns that he has divine powers. But those powers come with a price, as well as a legion of enemies who will do anything to make sure that Jodie never fulfills his destiny.
