Dolby Atmos-powered gaming headsets from Plantronics arrive this fall

In April, Xbox One and Windows 10 received Dolby Atmos, object-based surround sound that gives a height to sound to create a more dynamic listening experience. While Xbox One users have been able to take advantage of Dolby Atmos through speakers, for users who listen via headphones, of which there are many in the gaming community, the Dolby Atmos experience has not been available. That will change with a new line of gaming headsets from Plantronics. In partnership with Dolby, Plantronics will launch the RIG series, which will bring Dolby Atmos to headphones for Xbox One and Windows 10.

“We believe that gamers who invest in next-gen graphics deserve next-gen sound, and Dolby’s mission to transform entertainment makes them the perfect partner to create that heightened experience,” Plantronics gaming director Jack Reynolds said in a statement.

With Plantronics’ RIG series, users can reportedly hear audio cues coming from all directions, thanks to Dolby Atmos technology which separates audio into individual objects.

The Plantronics RIG 800LX, 600LX, and 400LX, all include codes in the box to activate Dolby Atmos on Xbox One or PC. All three headsets will be released this fall and are compatible with Windows 10, and all Xbox One models, including Project Scorpio.

Plantronics RIG 800LX

The 800LX wireless headphones feature 24-hour battery life and a “lag-free wireless connection.” The headset includes matching 40mm drivers, amplified sound, and low-frequency resonators for high-quality bass while limiting distortion. You can keep an eye on chat levels with voice feedback control. The 800LX comes with a noise-canceling microphone that mutes when moved in its upright position. With earcup mounted dials, you can easily adjust game, chat, and master volume levels. There are also four EQ settings which either “isolate pure highs, intensify the mid-range, enjoy seismic bass, or enhance vocal focus.”

Plantronics RIG 600LX and 400LX

Both the 600LX and 400LX include a pro-level amp, three EQ modes, dual analog wheels for controlling game and chat audio, and are connected via an auxiliary port on the included controller adaptor. The RIG 600LX emphasizes soundstage audio with distortion-free bass while keeping the Dolby Atmos-powered sound cues from being covered up. The 400LX has 40mm drivers made for “explosive game audio,” and a noise-canceling boom microphone. The 600LX launches at $130, while the 400LX goes for $100.

Plantronics also promised that more headsets featuring Dolby Atmos will be announced later this year.
