Your Google Home smart speaker can now make phone calls for you

There are a number of features that make Google Home awesome but perhaps one of the biggest announced at Google I/O was the ability for Home to make phone calls. On Wednesday, that feature is finally rolling out to Google Home owners — meaning you can now ask Assistant to call both people from your contacts and businesses.

The feature goes beyond simply being able to call companies by name. As Google notes in its press release, you could instead ask Assistant to “call the nearest florist,” making the feature much more convenient for those who might not know the names of all the nearest businesses.

Another cool thing about the feature is the fact that Home can distinguish different voices — so if one person in the house asks Assistant to “call mom,” the device will call their mom and not their roommate’s. For now, when you make a call, the person on the other end will see “unknown or “no caller,” though Google intends to change that by the end of the year. That also does not apply to Google Voice or Project Fi users, who can head into the Google Home settings. It also seems as though you can only make outgoing calls through Home — not take incoming calls. The feature is now rolling out to customers in the U.S. and Canada, though it will likely roll out in phases, so if you do not have it yet you may just have to sit tight.

Previous looks at code that came before the rollout gave a little insight into how it works — while some theorized that the feature will still occur through the user’s phone but would use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to handle the audio. In reality, it looks like the phone number is linked directly to Google Home and calls are handled through Google Voice. The code, spotted by Android Police, also shows that, at least for now, only outgoing calls can be handled through Google Home — and you have to answer incoming calls on your actual phone. It is possible that support for incoming calls will be added in the near future.

As mentioned, the app also offers manual control over which Google Assistant answers any given question. You might have multiple versions of Assistant at your disposal — one on your phone, another on your Google Home speaker, and another on your Android TV. According to Android Police, it is not yet known exactly how you will be able to manually select an Assistant, but a string of code in the update does refer to it being possible — so presumably we were waiting for Google to enable the feature.

Update: Calling feature is now live.

Google’s Gemini AI app gets a wider release. Is your phone on the list?
Google Gemini app on Android.

More people can now use and enjoy the Google Gemini AI app on their smartphone, as the company has expanded the list of regions where the Android version of the app is available through the Google Play Store. Specifically, it has launched the Android app in the U.K. and Europe, opening the service up far beyond its start in the U.S., where it was released in February.

What’s more, Google says Gemini will soon be available to iPhone owners, as the AI chatbot will appear on iOS in the next few weeks. It won’t be a standalone app though, as Gemini will instead work through the official Google app that can be downloaded now through the Apple App Store.

Google is making it easier to ditch your iPhone for an Android phone
Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and iPhone 15 Pro in hand.

Switching phones is never a smooth process, even if you’re switching between two different Android phones. However, when you’re trying to switch from an iPhone to Android or vice versa, it can be extra complicated -- and you can lose data and apps that you rely on. This is especially the case with Apple-to-Android transfers because the iPhone has a much stronger ecosystem lock-in with things like iMessage, iCloud backups, and exclusive apps like Overcast and Hyperlapse.

The good news is that with its Data Transfer Tool (also called Pixel Migrate on Pixel devices), Google may be trying to mitigate some of the phone-switching problems that arise -- specifically, losing access to your Live Photos. According to an APK teardown from Android Authority, Google’s Data Transfer Tool will finally resolve the problem of migrating iOS Live Photos to Android. It will do this by converting them over as Motion Photos.

Is the messages app on your Samsung phone crashing? Here’s how to fix it
Google messages versus samsung messages app icons side by side on Galaxy Z Fold 5.

App crashes are annoying, but they’re extra annoying when it's your text messaging app that crashes while you’re trying to reach someone or — worse — when you're trying to get a two-factor authentication code.

According to users on Reddit and the Samsung Community forum, the Samsung Messages app keeps closing when they try to open any conversation. This is happening across Samsung Galaxy models, including the S21 and S4 Ultra, and across different carriers, meaning it’s not a device or carrier issue. Many users have reported that restarting their phone, restarting in safe mode, and clearing the app cache hasn’t helped.
