‘Mad Max’ and ‘TrackMania Turbo’ headline April’s PlayStation Plus lineup

PlayStation Plus - April 2018 | Mad Max + Trackmania Turbo | PS Plus Monthly Games

Sony’s PlayStation Plus lineup for April includes a surprisingly good movie game and a fast and fun arcade racer. No, the April lineup doesn’t exactly matchup with March’s stellar Ratchet & Clank and Bloodborne duo, but both of the headlining titles are worth checking out.

Leading the charge on PS4 is Mad Max, an open-world game based on the post-apocalyptic movie franchise. You play as titular protagonist Max Rockatansky in a journey across a barren wasteland in pursuit of a group of nefarious raiders. Like the movies, Mad Max deals extensively in cars. A good portion of the experience is spent driving around and engaging in vehicular combat.

Mad Max originally launched in 2015, a few months after the critically acclaimed Mad Max: Fury Road released in theaters. Although its story probably won’t floor you and the mission structure proves to be somewhat repetitive, in the realm of open-world games, Mad Max is a fairly solid experience. It’s also eons better than most games adapted from movie franchises.

PS4 owners can also pick up TrackMania Turbo, the 2016 arcade racer published by Ubisoft. TrackMania Turbo boasts more than 200 pre-made tracks and gives users the opportunity to build their own tracks to play online with friends.

Last month Sony announced that it would discontinue PlayStation Plus free games for PS3 and PS Vita in March 2019. April’s games seem like a reflection of that impending change. PS3 users are left with In Space We Brawl and Toy Home as their freebies for April. In Space We Brawl is a generic twin-stick shooter, while Toy Home is an obscure, budget racing game that released in 2007.

Meanwhile, Vita owners get 99 Vidas, a beat-’em-up inspired by the likes of Double Dragon and Streets of Rage.

The sixth and final game for the month of April, Q*Bert Rebooted, is available on all three Sony platforms thanks to cross-buy. Sadly, the reboot of the classic arcade title received pretty dreadful reviews when it launched in 2015. At least Q*Bert had a memorable role in Wreck it Ralph, right?

As always, make sure to secure March’s freebies before April’s lineup takes the stage on April 3.

Astro Bot will reference one of PlayStation’s oldest memes
Astro Bot and its PlayStation character cameos, which include Aloy and Nathan Drake on the right.

The Astro Bot series is known for showcasing PlayStation history, with some incredible deep cuts and cameos. For the upcoming Astro Bot, which was officially announced during Sony's latest State of Play this week, that apparently comes in the form of a nearly 20-year-old meme.

In an interview with EW, Team Asobi head Nicolas Doucet mentioned some of the characters that players will encounter spread throughout the game's 80 planets. This includes some obvious inclusions, like Nathan Drake from the Uncharted franchise and Aloy from the Horizon games, but snuck into one of the paragraphs is mention of an island in the shape of a giant crab.

PlayStation State of Play returns this week, will feature 14 PS5 games
Three colorful PS5s float together in a line.

PlayStation will kick off the summer of digital video game reveal streams this week with a State of Play broadcast. The stream will take place at 3 p.m. PT on Thursday, May 30.

State of Play is one of Sony's primary livestream presentation formats. It tends to be slightly shorter than the company's flagship stream, the PlayStation Showcase. This State of Play is a significant one, though, as Sony's slate of first-party games for 2024 is entirely unknown at this stage. This stream should shed some light on what's coming later this year.

I would buy a PlayStation Portal 2 if it had this one feature
A Pulse Elite, DualSense, and PlayStation Portal sit on a table.

I've had a bit of a love-hate relationship with the PlayStation Portal since it launched. Initially, I was disappointed by Sony's cloud streaming device. I was impressed with its screen and appreciated its DualSense integration, but its slimmeddown features made it feel like a cheap version of a good idea. I've since learned to find a use case for my PlayStation Portal that turned it into an integral part of my gaming setup. It's very imperfect, but that doesn't mean it's not useful.

Ever since its launch, I've been hoping for a refreshed follow-up, whether that be a Pro model or a true PlayStation Portal 2. It may be way too early to start discussing that considering that the Portal just launched in November 2023, but the promising device has enough glaring flaws that I'd welcome a fast-tracked successor. If Sony were to make a PlayStation Portal 2, though, there's one feature that's nonnegotiable: Bluetooth.
