Mercedes-AMG E53 goes (mild) hybrid in search of more efficient performance

As the world waits for the Formula One-inspired Project One supercar, Mercedes-AMG is unveiling some less extreme hybrids. The 2019 Mercedes-AMG E53 sedan and wagon will get the same mild hybrid powertrain first seen in coupe and convertible versions of the E53, as well as the CLS53, when those models debuted at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show earlier this year.

The 2019 Mercedes-AMG E53 replaces the E43 as the lower-tier E-Class AMG model, sitting below the E63 in the hierarchy. Mercedes never passes up an opportunity to add a new variant, leading to a lineup as dense as the cast of Avengers: Infinity War. Amid that crowded lineup, the E53 and other AMG “53” models stand out by helping to advance Mercedes’ electrification plans.

The E53’s mild-hybrid powertrain sandwiches an electric motor between the engine and transmission, and adds a 48-volt electrical system and more powerful starter-alternator. This allows for a more aggressive engine start-stop system, and the electric motor provides a power boost at low engine speeds, improving acceleration. Electricity is harvested from the engine’s spinning turbocharger and regenerative braking, and is stored in a small battery pack. The system can’t drive the car solely on electric power, which is what separates mild hybrids like the E53 from conventional hybrids like the Toyota Prius.

The Mercedes-AMG E53 should be faster than a Prius, though. A 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, which produces 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque on its own, is combined with an electric motor that adds 21 hp and 184 lb-ft when accelerating from a standstill, according to Mercedes. Power is sent to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Mercedes predicts 0 to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds, while the top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. An optional AMG Driver’s Package will raise the limit to 167 mph.

In addition to the mild-hybrid powertrain, the Mercedes-AMG E53 gets AMG-tuned adaptive air suspension, and some subtle visual changes to distinguish it from less-sporty E-Class models. These include power bulges in the hood, prominent exhaust tips and rear diffuser, and an optional set of model-specific 20-inch wheels.

The 2019 Mercedes-AMG E53 sedan and wagon will hit European showrooms in June, but Mercedes hasn’t discussed U.S. availability. We’ll likely get the sedan at some point over the next few months, but slow sales of wagons on this side of the Atlantic mean it’s less likely that we’ll get that model.

We need more 7-passenger EVs, but the 2023 Mercedes EQS SUV has room to improve
Front three quarter view of the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV.

Mercedes-Benz is continuing to expand its EV lineup, this time with a model aimed at (wealthy) families.
As the name states, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV is an SUV derivative of the EQS sedan. With the EQS sedan positioned as the electric analog to the Mercedes S-Class, the EQS SUV is the electric version of the GLS-Class. And like that vehicle, the EQS SUV is available with up to seven seats across three rows.
That makes the EQS SUV an important vehicle not just for Mercedes, but for the cause of EV adoption in general. While the Tesla Model X and Rivian R1S also offer three rows for family-hauling duty, there’s a lot more room in the market for another entry. Given the popularity of equivalent gasoline luxury SUVs like the GLS, Land Rover Range Rover, and Cadillac Escalade, the EQS SUV arrives not a moment too soon.
The EQS SUV is scheduled to reach U.S. dealerships this fall in three guises. The base rear-wheel-drive EQS 450+ starts at $105,550 with destination, while the all-wheel drive EQS 450 4Matic and EQS 580 4Matic start at $108,550 and $127,100, respectively. Although it will be built in Alabama, the EQS SUV won’t qualify for the revised federal EV tax credit because it exceeds the $80,000 price cap for SUVs.

Design and interior
A defining feature of Mercedes’ EQ lineup is aerodynamic bodywork aimed at maximizing range. The typical SUV is not aerodynamically ideal, but Mercedes managed to achieve an impressively low drag coefficient for an SUV — at 0.26, it’s close to the Toyota Prius. But function clearly took precedence over form. Mercedes deserves credit for not going in the polarizing direction BMW did with its two-row iX SUV, but the EQS SUV looks like a melting scoop of ice cream.
More disappointing is the third row, which should be the EQS SUV’s defining feature, but seems more like a useless afterthought. Adults will find it difficult to insert themselves into the third-row seats, let alone tolerate riding in them. As in most three-row vehicles, the rear seats also pretty much eliminate cargo space. And if you want to fold them down to create more cargo room, you’ll have to do it manually as Mercedes didn’t include a power-folding system — a bit disappointing for a six-figure car. The EQS SUV also lacks a frunk; like the EQS sedan, the hood is sealed.

Mercedes-AMG EQE proves performance EVs are here to stay
mercedes amg eqe sedan preview

Mercedes-Benz is going all-in on electric cars, but it's not abandoning performance. Launching in the U.S. in early 2023, the Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 4Matic+ (or AMG EQE for short) sedan is the second EV from Mercedes' AMG performance division.

As with most AMG models, this four-door EV is a tuned version of an existing Mercedes, in this case the EQE sedan. Unveiled in September 2021, the EQE slots below the larger EQS sedan in Mercedes' growing EV lineup. The AMG version gets its own powertrain and numerous other hardware changes, plus subtle model-specific styling features.
