Here’s everything Square Enix featured during its E3 2018 showcase

Square Enix’s return to E3, in the form of a video presentation, was somewhat of a head-scratcher. The presentation only lasted 30 minutes and the majority of the trailers and games were either old news or stuff we saw during Microsoft’s press conference on Sunday, June 10. Still, there were a couple neat surprises and reveals. Here are all the games shown during Square Enix’s E3 2018 presentation, starting with the brand new stuff.

‘Babylon’s Fall’

This trailer took a long time to get going — the brunt of it is a timeline juxtaposed over an ancient map — but the PlatinumGames logo saved it. The trailer revealed next to nothing besides a few armor-clad warriors fighting swords at the end. Since it’s PlatinumGames though, the studio behind Bayonetta and Nier: Automata, it’s safe to say Babylon’s Fall will be action-oriented.

Babylon’s Fall arrives in 2019 on PS4 and PC.

‘The Quiet Man’

The bizarre trailer for Square Enix’s new game, The Quiet Man, was primarily live-action. The main character appears to be deaf. The tagline “silence rings loudest,” appeared on screen before he proceeded to beat up a few guys in the street. We’ll learn more about The Quiet Man in August, but like Babylon’s Fall, it will launch on PS4 and PC.

‘Monster Hunter World’ crossover with ‘Final Fantasy XIV’

The latest Monster Hunter: World crossover will bring Final Fantasy XIV content to the awesome monster-slaying action game. The free DLC drops this summer, marking the second time Final Fantasy content will come to the Capcom game (Final Fantasy XV-themed quests were previously available).

New ‘Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood’ patch

Square Enix released a trailer for the next Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood patch, dubbed Under the Moonlight, but it’s hard to say exactly what it will bring to the MMO.

‘Shadow of the Tomb Raider’

Lara Croft’s next adventure again received a significant trailer showcasing Shadow of the Tomb Raider‘s opening cinematic. Square also showed off more gameplay footage, which focused on the expanded stealth mechanics of Lara’s third adventure. Shadow of the Tomb Raider launches September 14 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

‘Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age’

We’re not quite sure about the carnival music that accompanied Dragon Quest XI‘s latest trailer, but we are excited that the localization of Square’s RPG is on track to launch September 4 on PS4 and PC.

‘Just Cause 4’

Revealed at Microsoft’s press conference, Just Cause 4 ups the intensity and wackiness of the open-world action franchise by adding tornados, lightning storms, and sandstorms. The updates to Rico’s grapple also look pretty darn cool. Just Cause 4 launches December 4 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

‘The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit’

Also unveiled during Microsoft’s press conference, The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit takes place in the world of Life is Strange. It stars a young boy named Chris who loves rockets. It looks quite charming and heartfelt and best of all, it’s free on June 26 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Dontnod teased that the game will introduce players to characters from Life is Strange 2, which the studio is currently hard at work on.

‘Kingdom Hearts 3’

To be simple, the Kingdom Hearts 3 trailer was identical to the one shown during Microsoft’s E3 press conference. It provided an in-depth look at the game’s Frozen world. There’s even a chance that Elsa could choose the darkness instead of the light. Kingdom Hearts 3 launches January 29 on PS4 and Xbox One.

‘Octopath Traveler’

We’ve known this for a while, but Octopath Traveler is a beautiful game. Square reminded us of the Nintendo Switch exclusive RPG during its video presentation. Octopath Traveler launches July 13 on Switch.

‘Nier: Automata’ on Xbox One

Again, already revealed during Microsoft’s press event, but Nier: Automata, bundled with all of its DLC, arrives for Xbox One on June 26.

Ubisoft will not attend E3 2023, but it will still host a summer live stream

Ubisoft will no longer be attending E3 2023, even though it said it would participate in February. Instead, the game publisher behind Assassin's Creed and Far Cry plans to hold its own Ubisoft Forward Live event in Los Angeles this June.
Ubisoft confirmed its change in plans to Video Games Chronicle today, with a spokesperson saying that while Ubisoft "initially intended to have an official E3 presence, we've made the subsequent decision to move in a different direction." This is a change in messaging from just over a month ago when Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said, "If E3 happens, we will be there, and we will have a lot of things to show."
What caused this change of heart in Ubisoft is unclear. However, it seems like the company found that it could still successfully promote its game lineup without being attached to the Entertainment Software Association's event. We don't know much about the Ubisoft Forward Live event other than it'll take place on June 12 in Los Angeles, but Ubisoft tells VGC that "we look forward to sharing more details with our players very soon."
This puts E3 2023 in a weird overall spot, as we currently know more about the companies that won't be at the event -- like Microsoft, Ubisoft, and Nintendo -- than we do about the publishers that will actually be there. After being canceled in 2020 and 2022 and being digital-only in 2021, E3 2023 was supposed to be the annual gaming trade show's grand return. Right now, though, the relevance and viability of E3 2023 are questionable.
ReedPop has not yet commented on the fact that Ubisoft is no longer attending E3 2023.

Nintendo confirms that it won’t be part of E3 2023
Pikmin and Bulborb in Pikmin 4.

Nintendo has confirmed reports that it won't be participating in E3 2023, meaning the gaming trade show will be missing one of its key vendors when it returns in-person this June.
"We approach our involvement in any event on a case-by-case basis and are always considering various ways to engage with our fans," a Nintendo spokesperson said in a statement to The Verge. "Since this year’s E3 show didn’t fit into our plans, we have made the decision to not participate. However, we have been and continue to be a strong supporter of the ESA [Entertainment Software Association] and E3."
After taking 2020 and 2022 off and being digital-only in 2021, this year was supposed to mark the grand return of E3, which was once a dominant game industry trade show that attracted every big video game company. Although Sony hasn't participated since 2019, it still came as a shock in January when IGN reported that both Nintendo and Microsoft would not be attending E3 this year as well. It appears that the report is true, as Microsoft has not confirmed any E3-related events outside of its independently run Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase.
Nintendo skipping E3 2023 not only takes away a vendor that dominated the show floor in previous years, but also raises questions about whether or not the company will hold an exciting Nintendo Direct around then. While Nintendo typically holds a big showcase with lots of first-party game announcements around June every year, in 2022 it only held a third-party driven Partner Showcase in June. Now that we know it won't be at E3 2023, we're left to wonder when exactly then next big Nintendo Direct will be.
E3 2023 will take place between June 13 and June 16, but don't expect Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft to have a big presence there.

Summer Game Fest returns just before E3 2023 next June
The official artwork confirming Summer Game Fest's return on June 8, 2023.

Geoff Keighley has confirmed when Summer Game Fest will return in June 2023. It will begin with a live kickoff show on June 8, 2023, placing Keighley's game announcement alternative less than a week before E3's grand (intended) 2023 return.
Unlike past years, Summer Game Fest Live Kickoff 2023 will feature a live audience, like Geoff Keighley's The Game Awards. It will take place in the YouTube Theater at Hollywood Park, with tickets going on sale in early 2023. It will still be livestreamed across platforms like YouTube and Twitch, though. It's currently unknown who's participating, how long Summer Game Fest will run afterward, or if it will feature a Summer Game Fest Play Days-like element for fans. Still, Keighley says all of that info will be revealed ahead of the event next year, teasing what people can expect.
"In keeping with tradition, we'll have tons of exciting announcements from the developers that are pushing the games industry forward, and will once again highlight other publisher digital events, demos, and more surprises to be announced in the coming months," Keighley says in a press release.
That June 8 start date, and the other Summer Game Fest events likely to follow, put Keighley's show just ahead of E3 2023. The ESA and ReedPop plan to bring E3 back between June 13 and June 16, 2023. With five days of lead time on E3, Summer Game Fest can coexist with the long-running gaming conference and encompass the plethora of publisher showcases that tend to precede E3.
Geoff Keighley made it clear that he wants Summer Game Fest and E3 to coexist for a while. "We've had extensive conversations with ReedPop about E3," he said in an interview with Epic Games Store. "I think it'll kind of fit together and flow kind of from what we're doing into what they're doing and stuff. E3, to me, is this kind of master brand that represents gaming news in June."
With the start date of Summer Game Fest confirmed, the coexistence of these two summer gaming events is a reality. Summer Game Fest returns on June 8, 2023.
