Google Testing Out Super Speedy Internet Service

Now that’s the Google we know—the search engine giant announced today on its official blog that it will build and test ultra high-speed broadband networks in a small test trial. Google says its goal for this experimental project is to make the Internet faster and more accessible for people. The tests will occur in various locations throughout the US and starting today Google will be putting out requests for information (RFI) to “identify interested communities” and collect responses from the public.

“We’ll deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today with 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections,” write Minnie Ingersoll and James Kelly, Product Managers at Google. “We plan to offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people.”

Google says it will announce its target communities sometime within 2010, but as for now the responses are welcome up until March 26. Check out the company’s video explaining its plans for the experimental fiber network tests.

SpaceX’s Starlink internet service reaches milestone

SpaceX’s Starlink service now has more than 3 million customers globally, the company announced this week.

“Starlink is connecting more than 3M people with high-speed internet across nearly 100 countries, territories, and many other markets,” SpaceX said in a social media post on Tuesday that also included a short video showing Starlink satellite dishes set up and providing an internet connection in various places around the world.

After Google I/O 2024, Google continues to roll out features that bolster its productivity apps -- this time, specifically with Google Sheets. As picked up by The Verge, Google has announced a much simpler way to generate easily formatted tables in the Sheets app. This new Sheets feature has been around for many years in Excel and has recently reached Google. Better late than never.

The option is called Convert to table, and you can use it by opening a Sheets document and clicking Format > Convert to table when the option reaches you later this month or early next. With this new option, Google aims for a more Excel-type experience by adding filters for each column. The rows also get visual separators, saving you time by not having to select the rows manually to turn them gray. The Convert to table feature also brings filters and column types and makes the drop-down menu creation easier.
