From Xbox to plastic blocks: ‘Overwatch’ is leaping into Lego sets

Scientist Winston — one of the best characters in Overwatch — says that “imagination is the essence of discovery,” and Lego is taking that motto to heart. The company will produce a line of Overwatch-themed Lego sets that are “coming soon.”

Blizzard made the announcement on its Twitter page, posting a video of game director Jeff Kaplan fiddling with a Lego mini-figure on his desk. Once it’s assembled, we see the figure is actually Tracer, who comes to life and does some acrobatic moves in front of him.

Lego hinted at the collaboration in August, posting a picture that showed six characters with question marks on top. Among those shown, McCree, Zenyatta, Genji, Widowmaker, and Mercy seem to be included. We also know Winston will be included in a set, as the official Lego website includes a teaser image with several bananas, as well as his famous “imagination” quote.

Presumably, the Lego sets will focus on the game’s many multiplayer arenas. “King’s Row” and “Hollywood” seem like perfect choices as do “Hanamura” and “Watchpoint: Gibraltar,” but it could also be a cool way for Blizzard and Lego to introduce us to locations that aren’t even included in the game. Since much of Overwatch‘s fiction is told outside of the game already in comics and animated shorts, this seems like a possibility.

If you are looking to get plastic Overwatch characters ahead of the Lego release, you have plenty of options. Many of them are available as Funko Pop! figures, including Tracer, Winston, Soldier 76, Mei, Widowmaker, and Reaper, and many are also part of Nendoroid’s own hyper-detailed line. We prefer the latter company’s figures, as their higher cost leads to much more customization options and personality than the Funko designs.

Overwatch has grown considerably since its original 2016 release, with new maps and several additional characters. If it continues to progress at its current pace, Lego should have no trouble coming up with new set ideas. The game is available now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, and Twitch Prime members can grab a special golden loot box for free through October 8.

Although Microsoft is shutting down the Xbox 360 Store next year and definitely wants you to pick up its newest console for Starfield, it has still found a new way to appeal to the nostalgia of Xbox 360 players. It's doing so through the new Mega Showcase Microsoft Xbox 360 Collector Building Set, which will be available this October.

This set will be available starting on October 8 and will cost you $150 dollars; that said, you'll only be able to pick one up at Target. Mega makes Lego-like replica models of things for people to build, and this one is intricately designed to look like the launch version of Xbox 360. It's at 3:4 scale and made up of 1342 pieces. With it, players can build a version of the Xbox 360, a controller, and a case and disc for Halo 3. Even the packaging it comes in looks like the boxes Xbox 360 consoles came in at release.
Once built, this model will actually have working lights and a disc drive, as well as a hard drive and side shell panels that are removable. It obviously won't be able to play actual Xbox 360 games, but it still looks like a faithful recreation of Microsoft's classic game console. This is far from the first time we've seen video games and their consoles branch over into the work of buildable toys, as Nintendo patterned with Lego to create various Mario sets as well as a replica NES.

Overwatch 2: Invasion finally brings three PvE story missions to the competitive shooter, but it was an arduous process to get here.

When Blizzard Entertainment first announced Overwatch 2 in 2019, the game’s main hook was new cooperative story missions that would finally give players the Overwatch narrative content they yearned for alongside more replayable Hero Missions and a Talent skill tree system. When Overwatch 2 eventually launched into early access in October 2022 after several leadership changes, it was free-to-play and lacked any narrative content. To make matters worse, a May 2022 announcement from Blizzard that it canceled work on the Hero Missions system put the future of PvE story content into question for many Overwatch players.

Overwatch 2 is coming to Steam, and more Blizzard games may soon be on the way

Blizzard Entertainment confirmed that Overwatch 2 will make its way to Steam on August 10, the same day its next season, titled Invasion, begins.

Overwatch 2 has been available on PC since its October 4, 2022, early access launch, but until now players had to download Blizzard's proprietary launcher, Battle.net, in order to play it. Although players will still need a Battle.net account that they can connect to Steam to play the game online, Overwatch 2 will be fully integrated into Valve's popular launcher, with support for things like achievements, compatibility with Steam friends lists, and Steam game invites. This launch is also timed to happen alongside the start of Season 6: Invasion, which will introduce the first batch of PvE story missions to the game.
