Amazon deal: Save hundreds on a Microsoft Surface Pro 6 or Surface Laptop

When you think of Microsoft, the first thing that comes into mind is probably the Windows operating system. The software company has made a pretty good run at the hardware industry as of late, however, even outside of the Xbox’s success in the gaming console market. The Microsoft Surface laptops and tablets are particularly good examples of sleek, lightweight, and modern Windows 10 machines, and are great alternatives to gadgets like the iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab, or MacBook Air for those who simply prefer Microsoft’s OS.

The Microsoft Surface tablets and laptops also aren’t as expensive as high-end Apple tech (such as the iPad Pro, to name just one), and a couple of them are on sale right now on Amazon, letting you score one for even cheaper. These two Surface devices are fine options for Windows users, especially if you already use a Windows PC, as they offer file and software compatibility between platforms:

The Microsoft Surface Pro 6 is the star of the Surface tablet lineup and remains at the top among our favorite 2-in-1 designs. The Surface Pro 6 by itself is a beefy Windows tablet, but pair it with a keyboard case like the Surface Type Cover and you’ve got a slim, featherweight hybrid laptop that even gives the MacBook Air a serious run for its money. Our review team named the Surface Pro 6 the best 2-in-1 thanks to its gorgeous 3:2 HD display, superb construction quality (an important consideration for something you’ll be carrying around), snappy hardware, and generous battery life.

Put simply: If you’re looking for the best Windows tablet, the Microsoft Surface Pro 6 is the one, and it’s on sale right now for $790 on Amazon after a $109 discount. If you really want to enjoy the benefits of the Surface tablet’s 2-in-1 hybrid capabilities, then the Surface Type Cover keyboard is also on sale for $92, saving you $38.

A cheaper alternative to the Surface Pro 6 (and one that comes with a keyboard built right in) is the first-generation Microsoft Surface Laptop, which might be a better choice for users looking for a full-on laptop rather than a 2-in-1 laptop/tablet hybrid. The Surface Laptop is a bit larger, too, with a beautiful 13.5-inch PixelSense display compared to the Surface Pro’s 12.3-inch touchscreen, hitting a nice sweet spot in size for a portable laptop that’s not too skimpy on screen real estate.

Although our reviewers loved the Surface Laptop’s super comfortable keyboard and innovative design, there were a few things that held it back a little bit; namely, the lack of extra ports and the Windows 10 S operating system which isn’t quite as good as the desktop version. If you love Windows and don’t mind the port situation, though, then it’s a solid value: A whopping 44% discount carves $577 off the price, letting you score the first-gen Surface Laptop for just $722 right now.

Don’t buy the Surface Laptop Go 3 — here’s what you should get instead
Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 3 front view showing display and keyboard.

As a former marketing professional and a laptop reviewer, I often find myself surprised and sometimes confused by the decisions companies make when launching a laptop. An example is when a company introduces just one or two configurations that may not meet the needs of a range of users and, as a result, starts a laptop off on the wrong foot. In that case, I can at least understand the complexity of manufacturing and component sourcing. Although I'll mention a lack of options in a review, I won't necessarily ding a laptop because of it.

Some mistakes, though, are harder to overlook. That's how I feel about Microsoft's Surface Laptop Go 3, which the company introduced at a significantly higher price than its predecessors. The laptop, which is designed and configured like a budget machine, starts at $800 and runs up to $1,000. Those are midrange prices, but the Surface just can't compete against many midrange laptops.

Microsoft Surface Pro 7

The Surface Laptop Go 3 is Microsoft's new affordable Surface laptop, with upgraded hardware and long battery life making it a compelling option for budget laptop buyers in 2023. But for anyone considering an upgrade to a Surface device at around that $800 price, the Surface Pro 7+ still presents an attractive purchase, and it can flip into a tablet when you need it.

That brings to mind the age-old question, of whether newer is automatically better. In this case, it might not be. Let's take a look at the Surface Laptop Go 3 versus Surface Pro 7+, to find out.
