Spotify Wrapped gives a personalized look at who you listened to most in 2019

Later this week, Spotify will be unveiling its personalized Wrapped stats. It’s a chance for Premium users to look back at the year that was and see which artists, songs, albums, genres, and podcasts captured their attention in 2019. Spotify has offered both a public and a personalized set of Wrapped stats in the past, but this year the company is expanding its view of the music and spoken-word world to an entire decade.

The Wrapped toolset, which also reveals facts like how many minutes of music you heard and how many songs you liked, has traditionally only been accessible via a custom website, making it a bit awkward to use. Last year, it required a bit of a hunt to find it. This year, however, Spotify is unlocking Wrapped’s potential as a social sharing opportunity: The Wrapped experience will also be available within the Spotify app itself, and share cards will be available for you to post on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat.

Beyond the annual opportunity to navel-gaze at our own music habits, Wrapped is an excellent opportunity to understand what the rest of the world is listening to. Given its massive global reach, Spotify is in a unique position to offer this perspective. Competing services like Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Google Play Music tend to have a much more U.S.-centric audience.

You might think this would reveal vast differences in how humans across the planet listen to music, but for the most part, the numbers reveal how we’re all heavily influenced by the strongest currents in music culture. Here’s a glimpse at the Wrapped stats for 2019, and the nine years that preceded it.

Spotify’s Car Thing now available to anyone for $90
Spotify Car Thing

If you took note of Spotify's very limited release of its Car Thing music player and thought that it might make a good addition to your vehicle, we have good news: It's no longer an invite-only exclusive. If you live in the U.S. and have a Spotify Premium account and $90 burning a hole in your pocket, you can grab one of these devices for yourself.

As a quick refresher, Car Thing is a device that's meant to make it a lot easier to navigate and play audio from Spotify in your car. Car Thing doesn't offer any functions that you can't get through your phone or your in-car infotainment system (if it has Apple CarPlay or Android Auto), but if you're one of the many folks who don't want to use (or can't use) one of those options, Car Thing is a $90 convenience.

Spotify’s HiFi tier was MIA in 2021. Will 2022 be any different?
Spotify app icon on iPhone.

Spotify announced almost a year ago that it would launch a new subscription tier for its Premium members called Spotify HiFi before the end of 2021. As the name suggests, Spotify said the new, more expensive tier would distinguish itself by offering "lossless CD-quality" audio -- a significant step up in quality over the company's current maximum streaming quality, which is still based on a lossy compression system. But 2021 is now in our collective rearview mirror and, so far, there's still no sign of Spotify HiFi.

And concerns are growing that even Spotify can't say for sure when or if it will actually launch the new tier. Now, 9to5Mac has spotted a message from the company on its community support site that doesn't exactly fill us with confidence:
Hey folks,

The Beats Pill is back, baby!
A pair of Beats Pill speakers.

In what's been one of the worst-kept secrets of the year -- mostly because subtly putting a product into the hands of some of the biggest stars on the planet is no way to keep a secret -- the Beats Pill has returned. Just a couple of years after Apple and Beats unceremoniously killed off the stylish Bluetooth speaker, a new one has arrived.

Available for preorder today in either black, red, or gold, the $150 speaker (and speakerphone, for that matter) rounds out a 2024 release cycle for beats that includes the Solo Buds and Solo 4 headphones, and comes nearly a year after the Beats Studio Pro.
