ATI Radeon HD 5830 Aims To Boost Midrange Graphics

AMD‘s ATI graphics division has been on a roll lately, introducing top-performing Radeon HD cards aimed at gaming and high-definition entertainment fans that have been well-received by consumers and bank accounts alike. However, ATI seems to think there’s space for another product at the high end of its mid-range line, and that that end it has just announced the ATI Radeon HD 5830 graphics card, offering DirectX 11 capability and ATI’s 40nm graphics technology at a price under $240.

“The ATI Radeon HD 5830 graphics card makes enthusiast-level performance even more accessible to gamers, adding another compelling choice to the award-winning ATI Radeon HD 5800 series,” said AMD Graphics VP and general manager Matt Skynner, in a statement.

In addition to DirectX 11 support, the HD 5830 supports ATI’s Eyefinity multi-display capabilities and ATI Stream technology for letting applications tap into the parallel processing capabilities of their graphics controllers. The card sports HDMI 1.3 (with 7.1 audio), dual-link DVI, and VGA output, supports 3D stereoscopic displays. The Radeon HD 5830 features the same 2.15 billion transistor count of its more power siblings, along with support for 1 GHz memory and an 800 MHz core clock; however, the HD 5830 scales back to 1,120 stream processors and 16 color ROP units: the result seems to be a card that beats ATI’s midrange offerings, but doesn’t stack up the ATI Radeon HD 5850 and 5870. The $239 price tag may make up for that in some consumers’ eyes, though: that’s about $50 less than the 5850, and $150 less than the 5870.
