Standout games from the Game Devs of Color Expo

The Game Devs of Color Expo, an annual event highlighting board and video games from “people of all genders, races, and sexual orientations,” held a livestream on September 18.

The roughly 40-minute video showcased games from this year’s attendees. The online-only expo starts on September 19 and runs through September 20, and the livestream acted as a preview to the festivities.

Quite a few games were featured in the livestream. Here are a few standouts that caught our eye:

Protocorgi

ProtoCorgi - Announcement Trailer [NA]

Few things are more adorable than a cartoon corgi that shoots lasers. The game is a shoot-em-up retro title in the vein of Gradius, or other similar games from the 16-bit era. The games cutesy art style belies what looks like an involved shooter with lots of variety. It was developed by Kemono Games, is available on PC and releases next month on the Nintendo Switch.

Xenosis: Alien Infection

Xenosis: Alien Infection [EGX 2019] Trailer

This game is a dark, atmospheric top-down shooter that’s reminiscent of Dead Space and the Alien movies. It’s set on a dimly lit spaceship and comes out next year.

OneBit Adventure

Official OneBit Adventure Trailer

OneBit Adventure is a roguelike dungeon crawler that looks like an old-school Game Boy game, complete with the appropriate bleep and bloop soundtrack. It’s a mobile game with the primary objective of survival, and it’s available on the Google Play store and Apple’s App Store.

Museum Multiverse

Museum Multiverse Trailer

This is a game about a young kid who wakes up in an empty museum, from Made in Brooklyn Games. It has a variety of different gameplay modes and looks multi-layered and atmospheric, kind of like if Harry Potter was a kid from Brooklyn. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a firm release date yet.

Don’t Give Up: A Cynical Tale

DON'T GIVE UP: A Cynical Tale Release Trailer 9/16/19

This game has a throwback retro pixel art style and covers topics of depression and daily struggle. Its cute visuals act as a contrast to its subject matter, but it also looks fun in an Earthbound sort of way, with some Undertale vibes thrown in.

The game was developed by Taco Pizza Cat Games, and it’s available on PC right now and coming to Nintendo Switch either by the end of 2020 or early 2021.

Xbox Game Pass has its own Super Mario Odyssey, and it’s a delight
A giant ghost is wrapped in chains in Hauntii.

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X have a lot of advantages over the Switch, but there's one advantage Nintendo never loses: games. While Sony and Microsoft struggle to put out consistent exclusives, Nintendo always manages to put out fairly high-quality games on a monthly bases (even if some recent releases have felt like filler). The fact that you can only play Super Mario Odyssey on a Nintendo console will always be the company's ace in the hole.

Thankfully, enough developers have been influenced by Nintendo's design that it's not hard to find a great title that scratches the same itch as a Nintendo classic on competing platforms. Just look at games like the Pikmin-inspired Tinykin. Xbox has been especially smart about seeking out games like that over the years and adding them to Xbox Game Pass. It's done that once again with one of its newest additions, the delightful Hauntii.

May is packed with great games, but don’t miss these 3 hidden gems
Key art for Zet Zillions

While its biggest hitters have been Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, XDefiant, and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, May has also seen indie games thrive. While some of these games, including Animal Well and Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, have clearly gotten the respect they deserve, in the past week alone, three standout games flew under the radar among all the AAA releases.

Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord is a remake of one of the most influential video game RPGs ever made, and it just exited early access on Steam and launched for consoles on May 23. Zet Zillions is a quirky roguelike card game with an enthralling gameplay loop and character designs that I won’t be forgetting anytime soon. Finally, there’s Starstruck Vagabond, a chill sci-fi shipping game created by Second Wind’s Yahtzee Croshaw. These three games are all quite different from each other, but that also makes it more likely that one of the games will speak to your specific tastes.

This retro Game Boy throwback is the modern-day Link’s Awakening
A character stands before a God in Isles of Sea and Sky.

If you've every played The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening on Game Boy, you know how special it is. While it initially looks like your average top-down Zelda game, it quickly gets delightfully weird. Shopkeepers will blast you with lightning if you try to shoplift, Goombas from Mario wander around, and the entire story revolves around a giant fish sleeping on a mountain. It's a fish-out-of-water story for Link, one that makes for the most mysterious but inviting Zelda game ever made.

Now, a new indie game is recapturing that magic. Isles of Sea and Sky just launched this week on Steam and it's a pixel-perfect homage to Link's Awakening. The adventure puzzle game captures the oddball spirit of that adventure, while doing its own thing entirely. And it does all that while playing with the limitations of a Game Boy art style. It's one retro game you don't want to miss this year.
