CD Projekt Red apologizes for Cyberpunk 2077’s rocky Xbox One, PS4 launches

CD Projekt Red issued an apology following Cyberpunk 2077’s rough launch. The developer says it should have paid more attention to the game’s PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions and promised that fixes were coming.

The company tweeted an apology out on the same yellow announcement backdrop that became synonymous with the game’s delays this year. The post apologizes for not giving players more transparency about the state of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of the game in the lead-up to its release.

“We would like to start by apologizing to you for not showing the game on base last-gen consoles before it premiered and, in consequence, not allowing you to make a more informed decision about your purchase,” says the post, which is signed by CD Projekt Red’s board of directors. “We should have paid more attention to making it play better on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.”

The studio outlined its plans to fix the game’s myriad of bugs and crashes. It says a new update is coming in the next week and that two large patches will follow in January and February, which aim to fix the most prominent issues on last-gen consoles. The company says that the updates will not make the game run as well as it would on a high-end PC, but will bring it more in line with that experience.

CD Projekt Red says that players who purchased last-gen editions of the game can get refunds for their copy. Those who picked it up digitally can do so through the PlayStation Network and Xbox stores, while physical owners can do so through the retailer they purchased it from. Anyone having trouble getting a refund can email helpmerfund@cdprojektred.com for support until December 21.

Cyberpunk 2077’s launch was a pain point for fans, who spent the weekend sharing horror stories about the glitches and crashes they’ve experienced thus far. Digital Trends will be releasing a review of the game later this week, which outlines the current state of the game following its day one patch.

CD Projekt Red announced several long-term projects, which include a new Witcher trilogy, a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, and a new IP.

The Warsaw-based developer gave a presentation on Tuesday giving an update on how the company has grown since Q1 2022, the performance for the original Witcher trilogy and Cyberpunk 2077 (they sold over 65 million and 20 million copies, respectively), and what its strategy will be to continue its growth going forward. During that presentation, it unveiled the three new Witcher games under the working titles Project Sirius, Project Polaris, and Project Canis Majoris, and a Cyberpunk game with the working title Project Orion.

In a company interview with CEO Yves Guillemot posted on the Ubisoft website Thursday, the executive reveals that there are remakes of Assassin's Creed games in the works, although he doesn't specify which ones.

"Players can be excited about some remakes, which will allow us to revisit some of the games we've created in the past and modernize them," he says, implying that it could pertain to games made before Odyssey. "There are worlds in some of our older Assassin's Creed games that are still extremely rich."
