CD Projekt Red shifts the way it makes games after Cyberpunk 2077’s shaky launch

Developer CD Projekt Red is overhauling its approach to making games following Cyberpunk 2077‘s rough launch. The studio will make several changes to its structure that will allow it to work on multiple games at once.

Up until now, the developer has primarily focused on creating one AAA game at a time. It plans to fundamentally change that model in 2022 by increasing staffing so that it can work on two major releases simultaneously. The studio outlined its plans for what it calls Red 2.0 in a video presentation.

“We want to be sure that we can work with two global brands at the same time while ensuring top quality of our products,” says CD Projekt Red Chief Technology Officer Paweł Zawodny. “… we want to set up versatile teams which combine various specializations and competencies. These teams will be further assisted by a cross-projects group of experts, who can contribute to key aspects of development. All these changes aim to enable us to work on multiple AAA games and expansions in parallel starting in 2022.”

The studio says its current focus for the rest of 2021 is launching more Cyberpunk 2077 patches and its delayed next-gen update. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is still scheduled for a next-gen update this year, as is mobile AR game The Witcher: Monster Slayer.

CD Projekt Red plans to make steps toward reducing employee burnout in the future via increased mental health support. The change seems to be a way of addressing the crunch crisis that plagued the studio during Cyberpunk 2077’s development.

Other notable shifts include changes to when the studio will reveal its projects. The studio says it will start talking about its games closer to launch, rather than revealing them years in advance. It does still plan to tease games that are in early stages, however.

Cyberpunk 2077’s Steam success is great, but we can’t rewrite its history
Jackie from Cyberpunk 2077 with a gun pointed at his head.

Cyberpunk 2077 has seen a huge resurgence as of late, thanks largely to the success of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Netflix's new and critically acclaimed anime adaptation of the sci-fi property. According to the global PR director at CD Projekt Red on Twitter, viewers watched 14,880,000 hours of the show in just the first week, putting it safely in Netflix’s top 10.

This has been a great boon for the game, which launched in a poor, unfinished state at the end of 2020, and has been getting gradual updates ever since to make it playable, improve on features like skill trees, and add new ones like wardrobe transmogrification. While it sold well at the start of its life cycle, there hasn’t been a spike in the number of players since then. At the time of this writing, however, Cyberpunk 2077 is the eighth most played game on Steam, according to SteamDB, and has nearly 100,000 concurrent players, although it peaked at 1 million players.

CD Projekt Red has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 is being played by 1 million people every day this week, marking a sudden rebound since its launch in December 2020.

The Warsaw-based company expressed its enthusiasm for the whopping statistic in a September 21 tweet, thanking new and returning players for playing the game, which encountered controversy for being released with countless bugs nearly two years ago. "Each day of this week Night City has been visited by 1 million players, both new and returning," the tweet said. "We wanted to use this opportunity to thank you for being with us and playing the game. Thanks, Chooms!"

The current-gen edition of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which will upgrade the game on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, will now launch in the fourth quarter of 2022 according to a tweet from developer CD Projekt Red.
