Honor and Qualcomm deal signals a new beginning for Honor, and new phones for us

Newly independent phone maker Honor has announced a partnership with Qualcomm, confirming it will release a smartphone with the new Snapdragon 778G mobile processor in the near future, and a flagship phone with a top-flight Qualcomm chip at a later date. It’s an important step forward for Honor — which was sold off by former owner Huawei in late 2020 — in its efforts to return to the global phone market.

Prior to gaining its independence, Honor smartphones used Huawei-developed Kirin processors, just like Huawei’s phone range. When the U.S. government restricted American companies from doing business with Huawei, Kirin chip production was affected, and in turn, so was Honor. Huawei sold Honor to a consortium known as Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology in November 2020.

The announcement Honor will work with Qualcomm shows the brand’s relaunch is underway, and it has used the news to confirm the name of the phone that will act as its solo, globally available debut — the Honor 50. Referred to as a series, at least one of the Honor 50 phones will use the Snapdragon 778G chip, which has been designed to bring some of the flagship tech featured in Qualcomm’s 8-Series chips to more affordable phones.

In addition to the Honor 50, Honor will bring out another in its Magic series of flagship phones, which it says will “leverage the most premium Qualcomm chipset to unleash the remarkable image processing capabilities.” It’s likely Honor is referring to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 processor, seen in phones like the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra and the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra. Honor’s Magic smartphones have always been interesting, with the 2018 Honor Magic 2 featuring a slide-down screen that revealed the camera array.

In recent months, Honor has focused on releasing wearables like the Honor Band 6, and laptops like the Honor MagicBook, but we haven’t seen a globally released smartphone since the Honor 9X Pro and Honor 20. The Honor 30 series and Honor View 40 phones were announced and released only in China. It won’t be the only manufacturer releasing phones with the Snapdragon 778G either, with Xiaomi, Motorola, Oppo, and Realme all signing up to use the new processor too.

Honor has not said when the Honor 50 will arrive, but states more information will come in June, at which time we may hear more about the next Honor Magic too.

Qualcomm drops its own name from new chips in favor of ‘Snapdragon’ alone
Qualcomm logo at an event.

"Snapdragon" has been synonymous with high-end smartphones for several years. People may not really know what chip their phone runs on, or what the numbers mean, but they likely know that it's powered by a Snapdragon. Qualcomm, which makes the expansive range of chipsets, is acknowledging the strength of the brand with a shift in the product line. Moving forward, the company is dropping its own name from the chips to let "Snapdragon" stand alone.

Qualcomm launches new Snapdragon 5G and 4G mid-tier chipsets
qualcomm snapdragon 778G+ 695 480+ 680 5G 4G MOBILE PLATFORM

Qualcomm usually refreshes its mid-range Snapdragon chipsets once a year. Breaking tradition, the chipmaker has now announced mid-cycle upgrades to several chipsets in the Snapdragon 7xx, 6xx, and 4xx series. The new launches include three 5G-enabled mobile platforms, including Snapdragon 778G Plus 5G, Snapdragon 695 5G, and Snapdragon 480 Plus 5G. Launched alongside these chipsets with 5G connectivity is the Snapdragon 680 with only 4G connectivity.

The Snapdragon 778G Plus and the Snapdragon 480 Plus offer minor upgrades over the Snapdragon 778G and 480 chipsets released earlier this year. Meanwhile, the Snapdragon 695 and the Snapdragon 680 are new additions to Qualcomm's lineup of mobile platforms. All of these offer minor upgrades instead of anything major as part of the company's fallback plan to keep its lineup refreshed despite the global semiconductor crisis.

Nokia G50 held in hand.

HMD Global has joined the ranks of smartphone companies launching really affordable 5G phones with the new Nokia G50. It costs $299 or 200 British pounds, putting it up against devices like the Samsung Galaxy A32 5G, the OnePlus Nord CE 5G, the Realme 8 5G, and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 5G.

It’s obvious from this list that HMD Global is up against considerable competition, so what does the Nokia G50 offer? The specification will be a familiar one if you’ve been following the low-cost 5G phone trend recently. The processor inside is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 480 with matching 5G modem, and a choice of either 4GB RAM and 64GB or 128GB storage, or as a 6GB/128GB version.
