Sony Debuts New OLED Display

Image used with permission by copyright holder

Sony has announced a breakthrough in digital displays. The new OLED can wrap around a finger, while still displaying a fully functional display.

According to Trend Hunter, the display will be a 4.1-inch OLED display that integrates organic thin film transistors. It can be wrapped around something as small as 4mm in diameter.

There was no specific word on where this tech will fit in, but the possibilities are varied and far reaching.  Imagine a newspaper where each page continues to change.  But beyond the various uses for this technology, there is one simple fact that will keep this on our radar. It is very, very cool.

The display is still in production, so no word yet on when these displays will hit the market.

OLED monitors just had a major breakthrough
A tandem OLED display shown off at Display Week.

There's some hubbub in the world of display tech right now over Tandem OLED. If you missed Apple's announcement of the new iPad Pro, you've probably never heard of Tandem OLED, but it's already making inroads into other devices. TCL, at Display Week 2024, showed off a slidable Tandem OLED display that could fit into a laptop, and it claims a brightness of more than 2,500 nits.

If you've caught our reviews of monitors like the LG UltraGear OLED 27, you'll know that's an insane level of brightness. And that all comes down to the Tandem OLED tech. Tandem OLED is so simple that it almost doesn't seem real. In order to increase the historically low brightness of an OLED panel, you just stack two OLED panels on top of each other to combine their brightness. Simple.

MacBook Pro OLED: Here’s everything we know so far
Halo running on a MacBook Pro.

While many of Apple’s laptop rivals have embraced OLED screens, Apple has stuck firmly with mini-LED in its MacBook Pro -- and the results have been spectacular. As we said when we reviewed the M3 Max MacBook Pro, it has the best display out of any laptop, bar none.

Yet, there whispers that Apple is working on something even better: its own brand of OLED display that could take the MacBook Pro to the next level. It’s still early days, and there are all sorts of different rumors flying about, but it seems that something big is definitely in the works.
