Microsoft shows off S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, sets April 2022 release date

Microsoft showed off an extended gameplay trailer and revealed a release date for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl. The game will release on April 28, 2022, for Xbox Series X/S and PC, and also will be a part of Xbox Game Pass.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl — Gameplay Trailer

In the trailer, the player character sits around a fire, talking with several companions in what appears to be the shadow of Chernobyl, where a nuclear power plant exploded in real life in 1986 and released a large amount of radiation. Previous games in the series have explored similar areas.

This will be the first new game in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series since 2009. Players can fight irradiated monsters, explore different locales for secrets, and connect with a variety of nonplayable stalkers. The game’s extended trailer features a variety of tools, including weapons and what appears to be a Geiger counter, a tool used to measure radiation. The player character can be seen gathering weapon pieces from the environment, which points toward a looting or scavenging mechanic. Players will also have to face mysterious, tornado-like bursts of energy that appear to be a common enemy of both the player and the environment’s irradiated creatures.

A variety of nonplayable characters make the experience more colorful and add some humor. The player character, who seems to be a full character rather than a player avatar, spent time seeking out residents of the game’s barren world. The group appears to be a band of ragtag scavengers who try to watch out for each other. The trailer ended with a look at a huge world that players will presumably be able to explore.

The game will receive a launch day release on Xbox Game Pass.

E3 2022 won’t happen in-person (and Summer Game Fest has already clapped back)
A purple E3 logo floats in the air.

For the third year in a row, E3 2022 will not happen as an in-person event. The Entertainment Software Association, which organizes the expo, has confirmed that the physical show has been cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the virus' new Omicron variant. In fact, the ESA didn't technically confirm that the show will happen in 2022 at all.

The news was broken by VentureBeat, which released a statement from the ESA regarding the yearly video game press conference. “Due to the ongoing health risks surrounding COVID-19 and its potential impact on the safety of exhibitors and attendees, E3 will not be held in person in 2022,” the ESA tells VentureBeat, “We are nonetheless excited about the future of E3 and look forward to announcing more details soon.”

This week was supposed to be a huge moment for the future of NFTs in mainstream video games, but the celebration was cut short. On Wednesday, GSC Game World announced that it was partnering with popular gaming blockchain service DMarket, which sells NFT items for games like Dota 2 for upwards of $1,000 a pop, to bring NFTs to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl. Players would get the chance to bid on unique items with cryptocurrency and maybe even get scanned into the game as an NPC. It was a much more ambitious pitch than the comparatively conservative Ubisoft Quartz.

One day (and a lot of angry tweets) later, the project was fully canceled. GSC Game World decided to remove any NFTs from the game on Thursday evening, just an hour after posting a statement that doubled down on the technology. It was a shocking 180 that dealt a blow to the technology’s future in gaming.

Developer GSC Game World has canceled all of its NFT plans for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl one day after announcing them. The announcement comes an hour after the official S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Twitter account published a statement doubling down on its commitment to NFTs.

Yesterday, GSC Game World and blockchain gaming service DMarket announced a partnership that would bring NFTs to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. Players would be able to bid for unique items in auctions and have the chance to get scanned into the game as an NPC via photogrammetry.
