At first, it sounded like the multiplayer aspect of Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood was little more than something shiny to distract from the fact that the campaign might be Assassin’s Creed 2.5, a product rushed to ride the wave of popularity that developer Ubisoft was enjoying following the critical and commercial success of Assassin’s Creed 2. At least, that is what it sounded like when the game was first announced, but after seeing the multiplayer in action at E3, it seemed like Ubisoft may be on to something. With the release of the beta on October 4, and the new trailer below hyping it, consider us intrigued. After seeing more of it, the campaign also looks like a worthy addition to the franchise, but we’ll have to wait to be sure about that.
The trailer highlights two game modes, “Wanted” and “Alliance”. Wanted is the version that the developer has been showing off for several months; essentially it is a free-for-all, where each player is given another player as a target to assassinate, which means that while you are hunting your target, someone else is hunting you. The class of character you choose gives you certain abilities, which you must use to complete your assassination contract and avoid being assassinated.
The mode “Alliance” features four teams of two players, and plays in a similar fashion to the “Wanted” mode, where you are both the hunter and hunted, but with a co-op twist.
The beta goes active on October 4, and the game will be released on November 16 for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
