Tis the season for the mega-hit release, with games like Call of Duty: Black Ops and Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood stealing the lunch money of all the smaller titles foolish enough to try to take marketshare from the behemoth sequels due out this year. Even the long, long, long, long gestating Gran Turismo 5 is set for a November 24 release (allegedly), and many games that don’t have the name “Call of Duty” on the cover have decided on a tactical withdraw, and will instead drop in early 2011.
That might be a very good thing for the industry. With games like Dead Space 2, LittleBigPlanet 2 and Portal 2 all due within the first two months of 2011, the industry could continue to rebuild its sales figures following the recession. March will also see a new Sims game, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, F.E.A.R. 3, and Crysis 2, so things are looking bright in terms of sales. But among the heavy hitting sequels lining up to vie for a place in your heart and your wallet, the first original title of the year will debut on February 22, when Bulletstorm is released for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.
Developed by Gears of War creators Epic Games, as well as their freshly acquired subsidiary People Can Fly, Bulletstorm will be published by EA. So despite the startling lack of a “2” or “3” behind the name, this game should receive a fair amount of attention and advertising as the date comes closer.
Bulletstorm is a futuristic FPS set in a world where a corrupt Confederacy keeps order through an elite band of mercenaries called Dead Echo. When the game’s protagonist, Grayson Hunt, discovers that the Confederacy is not what it appears, he is exiled to the furthest reaches of space to a planet inhabited by gangs and mutants. Hunt and his partner Sato must then fight their way to revenge.
