Marc Webb’s Spider-Man continues to fill out the cast, as another big name has joined the reboot. The Hollywood Reporter is claiming that comedian and actor Dennis Leary is in negotiations, and is expected to officially sign on to the film in the next few days.
Leary will play police Captain George Stacy, father of Gwen, who will be played by Emma Stone. In the comics, the Stacy’s had a complicated relationship with both Peter Parker and his alter ego Spider-Man. Gwen Stacy was Parker’s first love, while her father– a supporter of Spider-Man– was eventually murdered by Doctor Octopus, who then framed Spidey.
The script has been closely guarded, so no one knows how much of the comic history will be used, but things did not end well for the Stacys.
Leary joins Andrew Garfield, Stone, and Rhys Ifans who was recently cast as Dr. Curt Conners/The Lizard, Peter Parker’s mentor and Spider-Man’s enemy. With a slightly more regulated budget than the previous films, Webb and Sony seem to be going for the actors that they feel can best fill the roles, rather than just grabbing the biggest names they can. Throw in Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben and Sally Field as Aunt May, and you have a surprisingly strong ensemble cast.
So what do you think? Is the cast shaping up well or are they making mistakes? Sound off below and look for Spider-Man to hit theaters on July 3, 2012 in 3D.
