Amazon releasing Kindle apps for Android and Windows tablets

Today, Amazon announced that Kindle apps will be made available for Android and Windows based devices, further growing the family of devices which users can use to read books downloaded through the Kindle app. The new Kindle apps built for Android and Windows tablet computers will let customers “Buy Once, Read Everywhere”–on Kindle, Kindle 3G, Kindle DX, iPad, iPod touch, iPhone, Mac, PC, BlackBerry, and Android-based devices.

“Kindle is light weight, easy on the eyes with a paper-like Pearl e-ink display, and has a full month of battery life. It’s purpose-built for reading. Many people are buying both a Kindle and an LCD tablet computer,” said Dorothy Nicholls, Director, Amazon Kindle. “We’re very excited to support the upcoming Android and Windows LCD tablet computers with free Kindle apps that we’ll tailor for the particular devices. Our Whispersync technology makes it simple to move back and forth between devices. Read on your Kindle, read on your tablet, read on your phone. We’ll keep track of your last page read, and make it easy.”

In an increasingly competitive market for digital readers, Amazon has been able to stay competitive by diversifying beyond the Kindle device. Other competitors include Barnes and Noble’s Nook, the Apple iPad application iBooks and the Kobo Reader.

The Kindle Store offers one of the largest selections of books to read digitally. In addition to allowing users to buy a book once and read it on multiple platforms, Amazon also automatically backs up books so you can re-download them anytime.

Someone holding a Google Pixel 5. The screen is on and shows the Home Screen with an app folder open.

One of the best things about owning an Android phone is being able to change your default apps. If you've ever opened a file or an internet link with a certain app, and you chose Always when prompted, then that type of file will be opened with that app every time, saving you from tapping that app every time, and reclaiming some precious time. But what happens if you're the indecisive type or if you suddenly find a better app you'd like to use as your default? It's easy enough to go change.
Stock Android
“Stock Android” refers to any basic Android device that is similar to Google’s version. If you’re the owner of a phone running Stock Android — like the Google Pixel 5, the Xiaomi Mi A3, or the Motorola One Vision, here’s how to reset your app preferences.

How to share Kindle books with family and friends
Amazon Kindle Paperwhite next to the Kindle Scribe.

While we adore books, we have to admit that e-books have some serious advantages over traditional print. You can cram thousands of e-books into a single e-book reader, for one thing, making e-books perfect for long holidays, commutes, or just casually carrying around. Doing the same with traditional books would require wheeling around a suitcase or having arms larger than Hercules.

However, physical books are still better in some ways. Want to lend a great book to someone? Throwing a paperback book at them is far more practical than handing them your Kindle and telling them to give it back when they're done.
