Though we’d be more surprised if there wasn’t a new Mario game in the works, game designer Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed in an interview with Nintendo President Satoru Iwata that a new Super Mario Bros. game is in the works for the 3DS. Held to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Super Mario series, the Iwata Asks interview delves into the basics of what makes Mario work, how the core team (which hasn’t ever changed) of Mario developers work together, and how the advancement of technology has helped Mario stay relevant for so long.

“So, in the interests of adopting new technology for the Super Mario Bros. tradition, I am now making a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Nintendo 3DS system,” said Miyamoto, the creator of Mario.

Though no details were confirmed, the game will likely resemble the wildly successful New Super Mario Bros. games for the Nintendo DS and Wii, both of which have sold in upwards of 20 million copies, making them two of the most successful games of all time.

The Nintendo 3DS hits North American shelves on March 27 for a suggested retail price of $249.99.
