Gameloft is starting the day off right, with word that the mobile game developer has surpassed 200 million downloads in the iOS App Store, a press release confirms. This is admittedly just a fraction of the total number of app sales across the board, but still an impressive feat for a developer which has built a business out of creating console game-like experiences for mobile platforms. Some call it homage, others call it idea theft, but whatever your opinion may be, there’s no denying that it’s a formula that is both popular and successful.
“We have been able to develop a truly massive fan base by offering high-quality games on the App Store,” Gameloft senior VP of publishing Gonzague de Vallois said in a statement. “For millions of people worldwide, Gameloft is now synonymous with amazing gaming experiences on their iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.”
The N.O.V.A., Asphalt, Modern Combat and Let’s Golf games are all credited as key franchises in the company’s continued success. Right there you’ve got both a Halo-alike (N.O.V.A.) and a Call of Duty-alike (Modern Combat), but the developer’s diverse catalog also offers mobile device-friendly takes on a wide variety of genres, with releases that are clearly inspired by the likes of Grand Theft Auto. StarCraft, The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, Uncharted and even World of Warcraft.
The press release also states that the developer plans to launch at least 20 new titles before the end of 2011. Nothing specific is named, but with the planned prices expected to vary between premium, freemium and subscription depending on what the release is, you can probably expect a pretty broad range.
