Along for the Ride follows a woman’s transformative summer

The first week of May is traditionally the beginning of the summer blockbuster season. However, Netflix is counterprogramming that trend by using that slot to premiere Along for the Ride, a new romantic drama.

Emma Pasarow stars in the film as Auden, a young woman who has just finished high school and is preparing for life in college. Because her parents have split up, Auden chooses to spend her final summer of freedom with her father and his new wife. But coming to the seaside town of Colby is more than just Auden’s attempt to reconnect with her dad. She wants to find the woman that she’s going to become.

That’s where Eli (Belmont Cameli) comes in. He’s the local guy who shares Auden’s crippling insomnia. Since they can’t sleep at night, Auden and Eli pretty much have the town to themselves while everyone else is dreaming. This is where Auden finds a new side of herself that she never suspected that she had.

You may recognize a few familiar faces in that trailer, including Andie MacDowell, Dermot Mulroney, and Kate Bosworth, all of whom have plenty of romantic films in their list of credits. MacDowell plays Auden’s emotionally distant mother, Victoria, while Mulroney portrays Auden’s father, Robert. Bosworth is stepping into the role of Robert’s much younger wife, Heidi, which makes her Auden’s stepmother. Surprisingly, Auden will feel a stronger bond with Heidi than with Robert because of Heidi’s willingness to open up her life to her new stepdaughter.

Along for the Ride was written and directed by Sofia Alvarez from the novel by Sarah Dessen. It will premiere on Netflix on Friday, May 6.

A man raises his hands in May December.

It's not uncommon to find a great classic movie on Netflix -- there are dozens to choose from. If, however, you want to be confident that the movie you pick is actually going to be great and not just mediocre, then you have a problem. Netflix has flooded its own service with so much stuff that it can be difficult to tell the good from the bad.

Here's the good news: We've pulled out the one movie you should definitely make time for on Netflix this month. May December tells the story of a couple who started out when the man was just 13 years old, and spirals out the implications of that twisted, uncomfortable tale. Here are three reasons you should definitely check it out on Netflix.

3 underrated (HBO) Max movies you should watch this weekend (June 28-30)
A girl looks at a boy in House at the End of the Street.

June is surprisingly over, and with it, a great month for movies comes to a satisfactory close. You've probably watched Inside Out 2 or Bad Boys: Ride or Die or maybe even The Bikeriders. From blockbusters to indie fare, the theatrical movie business has been robust and healthy.

The same goes for streaming. Netflix had a big hit with Richard Linklater's Hit Man, while Amazon Prime Video recently premiered the latest bonkers season of The Boys. HBO and Max have been quieter, but their robust library speaks volumes to the streamer's high quality. The following three films are older, but are just as worth your time as new hits like House of the Dragon season 2.
