MultiVersus gets a closed alpha and EVO tournament

Player First Games and WB Games finally gave us another look at the wacky Warner Bros. crossover fighter MultiVersus. We not only get to see developers fight Smash Bros. pros KAKAT and VoiD, but got confirmation of a closed alpha and EVO appearance as well.

MultiVersus is a “platform fighter” that plays similarly to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Instead of video game characters, this game gathers a lot of iconic Warner Bros. characters like Shaggy, Superman, and Steven Universe, and the game emphasizes 2v2 matches as the primary mode. Warner Bros. revealed the game last November after lots of leaks, and this is our first in-depth look at the game since then. While the video doesn’t reveal too much outside of some new stages, it’s our best look yet at how MultiVersus plays.

Alongside this new video, Warner Bros. Games also confirmed that it is holding a closed alpha across all platforms between May 19 and May 27 to test cross-play and rollback netcode. You can sign up for the alpha on MultiVersus‘ website.

Surprisingly, we also learned that a MultiVersus tournament will be held at EVO this year. EVO is an annual event where pro players compete in the most popular fighting games. While MultiVersus isn’t one of EVO’s main games as it hasn’t launched yet, Warner Bros is still holding a 2 vs. 2 tournament for MultiVersus during the event.

MultiVersus does not have a firm release date yet, but we know it will be released for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X as a free-to-play game sometime later this year.

All the free characters in MultiVersus right now
A large group of DC and Warner Bros characters stand together in MultiVersus.

Taking a page from other free-to-play games with large rosters, such as League of Legends, MultiVersus gives players multiple ways to experiment with new characters. Without playing to earn enough gold to completely unlock a character, you can always play the full roster in training or local modes. However, that won't be the way most people want to play, and with more and more characters planned to come to this crossover fighter, even the most dedicated players will have trouble earning enough currency to unlock them all.

That's where the rotation of free characters becomes so valuable. MultiVersus rotates which characters in its roster are free for everyone bi-monthly, or every two weeks, with the current offering being four free characters at a time. Here are the characters you can play as, free of charge, right now.

Black Adam comes to MultiVersus alongside arcade mode
A pixelated version of Black Adam flashes on the screen of a MultiVersus arcade machine.

After two months of waiting, DC's Black Adam will finally join the battle on MultiVersus later this week. And in a shock to fans (literally and figuratively) he's also bringing Arcade Mode to the game with him.

Warner Bros. Games and Player First Games released a teaser trailer on Twitter last night of a 1980s-style TV commercial showing a MultiVersus arcade machine and Black Adam showing up on the screen in pixel form to the sound of thunder before the lightning causes a blackout. As shown in the banner for Season 1, the Black Adam that will come to the game is based on the comic books, not the DCEU version played by Dwayne Johnson in the latest film, Black Adam.

MultiVersus Halloween event guide and rewards
Batman holding Shaggy.

It seems that every game with an online element, especially those that are free-to-play, is getting in on the Halloween spirit. Whether they're shooters, RPGs, or, in this case, fighters, there is always a fun way to bring in the spooky season with a new mode, event, and special rewards. For MultiVersus, this holiday will be a major one, as not only will the new character Stripe be introduced with the patch, but there will also be an entire host of Halloween content.

Unlike some other larger-scale games, MultiVersus can't exactly create brand-new dedicated game types just for Halloween, as much as we'd be excited if they did. However, that hasn't stopped the team from adding some sweet incentives for playing and a new little layer to the game that will let you get your hands on some brand-new rewards that you can't get any other way. Here's a full guide on the Halloween event in MultiVersus and what rewards you can snag.
