Here’s a funny thing. You remember a couple weeks ago when Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson was hit with a lawsuit from Bethesda Softworks alleging that the upcoming Scrolls game from his studio, Mojang, has a title that infringes on the publisher’s Elder Scrolls franchise. Persson responded at the time with his typical good humor, expressing hopes that it was just a case of “lawyers being lawyers.”
That sense of humor is in full effect again today with a new update on Persson’s blog, The Word of Notch. He suggests that Mojang and BethSoft settle this ongoing legal dispute like civilized people, with Quake 3.
“Three of our best warriors against three of your best warriors. We select one level, you select the other, we randomize the order. 20 minute matches, highest total frag count per team across both levels wins,” he writes. “If we win, you drop the lawsuit. If you win, we will change the name of Scrolls to something you’re fine with.”
Would that we could live in a world where disputes like this were decided with Cheetos-infused fragfests instead of countless court hours and legal fees.
