The Apple Watch Series 8 and SE 2 sound more boring than we thought

Last year’s Apple Watch Series 7 was a peculiar device. It was heavily rumored to get a major redesign to match the flat rails of the iPhone 13. That didn’t happen. Instead, we got an iterative upgrade with very minimal changes. Now, according to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the Apple Watch Series 8 could give us another year of tepid Apple Watch updates.

Gurman said in his Power On newsletter that the S8 chip of the next Apple Watch will be similar to the S7 chip found in the Apple Watch Series 7. Specifically, Gurman says the “S8 chip will have the same specifications as the S7.” For reference, the S7 chip is the same as the S6, which powered the Apple Watch Series 6 in 2020. That’s two years of no major processor changes for the Apple Watch. Gurman goes on to say that we could get “an all-new processor” in 2023, but the lack of chipset updates this year is disappointing to hear.

Apple is also expected to introduce a new Watch SE 2 alongside the Watch Series 8. “The SE will stick to the screen size of the current model, rather than moving up to the larger Series 7 size. But it may get the same S8 chip as the Series 8,” says the report. This will be an upgrade from the S5 chip in the current Apple Watch SE from 2020.

Gurman also goes on to say that Apple may finally discontinue the Apple Watch Series 3. This is something that was previously rumored earlier this year, and Gurman doubles down on that point. “The software update drops support for the Apple Watch Series 3, so I’d finally expect that model to be discontinued in the fall. The current SE could slide into that Series 3 price point, with the new SE becoming the mid-tier option,” Gurman explains.

According to past rumors, Apple is prepping a sports-focused model with a rugged casing in the Apple Watch Series 8 lineup. As a result, we could be looking at three Watch Series 8 devices. The upcoming smartwatch will run Apple’s latest WatchOS 9, which was introduced at WWDC 2022. It includes four new watch faces, workout app updates, better sleep tracking, as well as a new Medications feature. You will also get Heart Rate Zones in the Workout app that will measure the intensity of your workouts regardless of your exercise regimen.

It has been over six months since the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 launched, and they are still considered two of the best smartwatches on the market. However, there are two significant reasons why you might not want to purchase either of these models.

Those reasons are the Apple Watch Series 8 and the first-generation Apple Watch Ultra. That's right — buying a 2022 Apple Watch over the newer models might be a better choice for you.

8 watches you should buy instead of an Apple Watch
A person wearing the Apple Watch Series 9.

The Apple Watch Series 9 is the best smartwatch you can buy, regardless of the fact you can only use it with an iPhone. It's also great that it comes in three flavors — the Series 9, along with the Apple Watch SE 2, and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 — to suit many more people and pockets than you may first think. However, perhaps you want something a little different on your wrist or even a weekend alternative when you don’t feel like wearing a touchscreen watch.

That’s where this list should help you out, as we’ve gathered eight watches to buy instead of the Apple Watch. Notice I said “watches,” and not just smartwatches, as some non-connected wristwear has been included. Our choices cover the entire Apple Watch range in terms of price, even going above and below, to give you some real inspiration about a watch to buy instead of — or as well as — the superb Apple Watch.

The Apple Watch Series 9, released in September 2023, is the latest addition to Apple's line of smartwatches. Alongside the Apple Watch Ultra 2, the Series 9 boasts many impressive features and upgrades.

The Apple Watch Series 9 resembles its predecessor, the Apple Watch Series 8, in terms of design. However, it does come with a few notable improvements. The watch offers more peak brightness, which makes it easier to view in bright sunlight, and the new chip is faster and more efficient than the previous model. It can also process some Siri requests entirely on-device, allowing you to perform certain commands even when not connected to your iPhone.
