Video game sales down 23 percent in August – 3DS sales up 260 percent

August was not a good month for games. According to NPD Group (via Edge), retail video game sales for the month were down 23 percent compared to last year, ending the month at $669.9 million. Hardware sales lost 12 percent of their steam during the period, but software sales took the blunt of the blow with a 37 percent decline, pulling in 285.9 million.

There are many possible reasons why sales are low. For starters, there weren’t a lot of major releases in August. It was a quiet month. Deus Ex: Human Revolution (review) was released in the final days of August and took the top spot almost instantly. Most of the top 10 is filled with older titles like Just Dance, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Zumba Fitness, Cars 2, and Call of Duty: Black Ops. CVG has a complete chart of best sellers for the month.

A lack of games aside, it’s likely that the current generation of consoles–the Wii, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3–are simply losing steam. Video game consoles traditionally have about a five year lifecycle and sales tend to drop off as rumblings of new consoles begin. Nintendo has already announced the Wii U and its likely that Microsoft and Sony will be pressured into announcing new versions of their systems in the near future as well. Of course, the poor U.S. economy is likely a partial culprit as well as is the rise in cheap online, tablet, and smartphone gaming.

Surprisingly, the only area to show any growth was handheld gaming, thanks to impressive sales of the Nintendo 3DS, which was buoyed by a massive price cut on August 12. In the 19 days after the price cut, Nintendo says sales grew 260 percent from the same 19 day period in July (an odd figure to calculate, we admit). More than 235,000 3DS systems were sold during the month. The cut from $250 to $170 was spurred by low sales of the system since its March debut. It will be interesting to see if the 3DS continues to carry its momentum into the holidays or if the price cut’s sales effect will evaporate in the weeks ahead.

Many analysts are still optimistic about the last four months of the year. The holiday season typically makes up about half of all video game sales for the year, which gives the industry a chance to make up some of the many sales it has lost so far.

Nintendo’s 3DS discontinuation marks the end of an era for handheld gaming
Person holding Nintendo 3DS in hands

While yesterday’s PlayStation 5 launch announcement marked an exciting moment for the future of gaming, Nintendo quietly put an end to the era of dedicated, portable gaming devices. The company confirmed that it has discontinued production of the Nintendo 3DS family of handhelds.

On paper, the decision is a no-brainer. The Nintendo Switch is a massive success for the company, bringing the worlds of console and handheld gaming together. While Nintendo maintained its position that the Switch was not a replacement for the 3DS over the years — reiterating that point last year when the Switch Lite launched — it had become increasingly clear that the 3DS was outdated within Nintendo’s new strategy.

3 PlayStation Plus games to play this weekend (February 14-16)
Players charge at each other in Chivalry 2's Arena mode.

PlayStation surprised us earlier this week and a new State of Play showcase that highlighted a ton of upcoming PS5 games to look forward to, such as Metal Gear Solid: Delta and Onimusha: Way of the Sword. However, we have a long time to wait for most of those games, and even longer if you want to snag them on PlayStation Plus. This month has no shortage of new games coming out to play, but if you don't have the time or money to get them all, PlayStation Plus has you covered. We picked out some gems from the catalog that might have gone under your radar at the time. Whether you want a deep RPG, fantastic party game, or hardcore multiplayer title, these are the games you should play this weekend.
The Outer Worlds
The Outer Worlds - Come to Halcyon Trailer | PS4

There's a good chance that Avowed will eventually make its way to PS5, but right now, there's no official word on that. What has been on PlayStation Plus for a while is the last major RPG from Obsidian, The Outer Worlds. Often compared to a Fallout in space, this is a more contained RPG experience where you explore several hub locations rather than a single open world. The entire game is a parody on corporations, capitalism, and class that hits way more than it misses. You are given a ton of different build options, and the companions are some of the best we've had the pleasure to meet. This isn't a huge game, but we do need to give you fair warning that it is leaving the service this month so you will need to commit to it if you want to finish it all. Even if you don't, it is worth a purchase to be ready for The Outer Worlds 2.
