Fifty Shades of Grey, the feature film adaptation of the famous erotic novel, debuts at No. 5. 10. Shrek (2001)
Shrek is not your ordinary fairy tale. The protagonist is Shrek (Mike Myers), an antisocial ogre who wants to be left alone in his swamp. Shrek’s dreams of peace are ruined when Lord Farquaad of Duloc (John Lithgow) banishes fairy tale creatures to the swamp. Determined to win his swamp back, Shrek cuts a deal with Lord Farquaad. If Shrek rescues Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) so she can be Farquaad’s bride, then Farquaad will move the fairy tale creatures out of the swamp.
With Donkey (Eddie Murphy) by his side, Shrek travels to a castle to rescue Fiona, who is being held prisoner by a fire-breathing dragon. Though the mission is successful, Fiona’s dark secret threatens to ruin Shrek’s deal with Farquaad.
9. Under Paris (2024)
In Under Paris, Marine researcher Sophia Assalas (Bérénice Bejo) and her teammates are searching for a shortfin mako shark nicknamed Lilith in the North Pacific Ocean. The expedition ends tragically, as Sophia’s entire team, including her husband Chris (Yannick Choirat), dies at the hands of Lilith. Sophia is the only one to escape, though she gives up her research.
Three years later, Sophia works at an aquarium when she’s approached by Mika (Léa Léviant), an environmentalist, with a shocking revelation: Lilith is in the River Seine. To make matters worse, Paris is the host of the World Triathlon Championships, with the competitors planning to swim in the Seine. With little time to spare, Sophia must overcome her fears and get back in the water to stop Lilith from turning the Seine into a graveyard.
8. The Lego Batman Movie (2017)
Enter the Lego multiverse in The Lego Batman Movie, the spinoff to The Lego Movie. Batman (Will Arnett) is a masked vigilante who protects Gotham City from criminals like the Joker (Zach Galifianakis). In their latest showdown, Batman hurts the Joker’s feelings, setting the villain on a quest for revenge to prove to the Dark Knight that he is a worthy adversary. The next day, Batman, as Bruce Wayne, attends a gala where the Joker and other villains turn themselves in.
Batman doesn’t buy this act and believes the Joker is up to no good. Batman plans to steal Superman’s Phantom Zone projector, a device that can banish anyone to the Phantom Zone. However, Batman cannot complete his mission after Alfred forces him to look after Dick Grayson (Michael Cera). With Gotham in danger, Batman must do something he rarely does — team up with his allies to stop the Joker.
7. The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
Thanks to NBCUniversal’s deal with Netflix, one of the biggest titles of 2023 – The Super Mario Bros. Movie – is available to stream on Netflix. Based on the popular characters from the Nintendo games, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is an origin story for Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day), two Italian-American brothers working as plumbers in Brooklyn, New York.
While fixing a water main leak, the two brothers are sent down the Warp Pipe into two kingdoms. Mario lands in the Mushroom Kingdom with Princess Peach (Furiosa‘s Anya Taylor-Joy), while Luigi appears in the Dark Lands ruled by Bowser (Jack Black). Mario sets out to find Luigi and save the world from Bowser’s reign. The film also features other notable characters like Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) and Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen).
6. Ultraman: Rising (2024)
Ken Sato (Christopher Sean) is a baseball player who returns to fight kaiju, a.k.a. giant monsters, as the superhero Ultraman. Ken reluctantly agreed to take on the Ultraman mantle from his father, Professor Sato (Gedde Watanabe). After battling the bird-like Gigantron, Ken is startled to find the Gigantron had an infant, Emi.
Emi imprints on Ken, believing Ultraman is his parent. Now, Ken must balance being a superhero with serving as a parent to Emi. Naturally, problems arise due to his lack of experience as a parent. Over time, Ken grows closer to Emi, complicating his mission to protect Tokyo from other kaiju.
5. Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)
The erotic romance novel from author E.L. James came to life in the feature film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey. When her roommate is sick, college senior Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) takes her place in an interview with Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan), a 27-year-old billionaire, for their school’s paper. Sparks fly, but neither acts on their desires.
After a few dates, Christian reveals to Anna that he is a dominant person who partakes in relationships involving BDSM tactics. The sexually inexperienced Anastasia agrees to Christian’s demands, and the two embark on a passionate affair fueled by their sexual desires. As time passes, Anastasia grows closer to Christian and wants to build a genuine relationship. Is the cold-hearted Christian ready to commit?
4. Hit Man (2024)
Inspired by a true story, Hit Man stars Glen Powell as Gary Johnson, a lonely college professor who spends his free time working sting operations for the New Orleans Police Department. Gary fixes the equipment used to watch and listen to conversations between undercover cops and suspects. After one of the cops is suspended, Gary becomes the fake hitman and works to entrap criminals. Gary takes on fake personas catered to each criminal’s personality to better elicit confessions.
Much to the department’s surprise, Gary is a natural. During an operation, Gary, who is under the persona of “Ron,” meets Madison (Adria Arjona), a woman looking to kill her husband to escape an abusive marriage. Gary takes pity on Madison and convinces her to call off the hit. Gary begins a romantic relationship with Madison, but a dark secret threatens to thwart his personal and professional lives.
3. Home (2015)
An alien race called the Boov, led by Captain Smeck (Steve Martin), conquers Earth, moving all the humans to the Australian Outback. Tip (Rihanna), a young teenage girl, manages to evade capture with her cat. While searching for supplies, Tip meets Oh (Jim Parsons), a clumsy alien on the run from the Boovs after accidentally sending a message to their enemies, the Gorg.
Oh needs to find a place without Boovs, so he agrees to help Tip find her mother. As Tip and Oh embark on their adventure, the duo learns the importance of family and what it means to have a home. However, the duo must hurry before the Gorg arrive on Earth and threaten the entire Boov race.
2. Tell Them You Love Me (2023)
The controversial case about the nature of consent is documented in Tell Them You Love Me. Anna Stubblefield is a college professor who forms a relationship with Derrick Johnson, a nonverbal man with cerebral palsy. At first, Stubblefield agrees to help Johnson with his communication skills by using a keyboard with an LED screen. Later, the two fall in love and embark on a consensual sexual relationship, even though Stubblefield is married.
Daisy Johnson, Derrick’s mother, soon intervenes and says her son could not engage in physical or emotional intimacy, meaning Stubblefield would have to move his hands to communicate. This leads to a criminal case, with charges of sexual assault being brought against Stubblefield. The documentary attempts to sort through all the details and piece together what happened.
1. Trigger Warning (2024)
Jessica Alba is ready to take names and kick butt in Trigger Warning. Alba stars as Parker, a Special Forces soldier forced to return to her hometown after the surprising death of her father. Parker’s father owned a bar, which she now inherits because of his death. After coming home, Parker meets Senator Swann (Anthony Michael Hall), a corrupt politician who runs the town.
Parker starts to question her father’s death, learning it was not an accident. With most of the town against her, Parker allies herself with Mike (Gabriel Basso), the local drug dealer, and Spider (Tone Bell), a fellow soldier, to find out what happened to her father and take out a violent gang that’s running the town into the ground.
