Netflix renews streaming deal with ABC

Netflix announced today that it will continue to offer its streaming customers shows from the Disney-ABC Television Group, which includes ABC Studios, Disney Channel and ABC Family. Additional shows from these networks will also be added to the Netflix lineup as part of the renewal deal.

According to the streaming agreement, episodes from the new seasons of shows currently being aired on the Disney-ABC channels will be available to Netflix customers 30 days after the last episode of that season airs on its original channel.

Additional episodes from the following series will be added to the Netflix library:

• “Grey’s Anatomy”
• “Private Practice”
• “Ugly Betty”
• “Brothers and Sisters”
• “Army Wives”
• “The Secret Life of the American Teenager”
• “Melissa & Joey”
• “Make It or Break It”
• “Phineas and Ferb”
• “Good Luck Charlie”
• “The Suite Life on Deck”
• “Hannah Montana”
• “Switched at Birth”
• “Kick Buttowski”
• “Alias”

Any addition of new, quality content is good news for Netflix, which is struggling to breath strong growth into its business amidst a lingering air of souring public option that follows a series of damaging missteps. According to its recent third quarter financial earnings report, Netflix lost about 800,000 customers after the company decided to increase the price of receiving both streaming and DVD-by-mail rentals by about $6 a month, and then announced that it would be splitting off its DVD rental business entirely from Netflix and renaming it Qwikster.

While the price hike remains intact, the Qwikster plans have been scrapped, and the company’s streaming and DVD rental businesses will remain under the Netflix brand.

Despite its hardships and public relation screw-ups, Netflix remains wildly popular, with about 23.8 million subscribers worldwide (21.5 million of which subscribe to the streaming option). Netlfix also recently launched in many countries across Latin America, and has plans to launch in the UK and Ireland next year.

Netflix and Prime Video also have new arrivals this week with Supacell and My Lady Jane. The former plays like a British remake of Heroes with an all-Black cast of main characters, while the latter takes a historical figure and turns her life upside down into an unexpected fantasy. My Lady Jane caught us by surprise, and it may end up as one of the sleeper streaming hits of the summer.

The 50 best movies on Netflix right now (June 2024)

At the time this post was published, The Flash has risen to No. 2 on the list of the most popular movies on Netflix. Now, we're not doctors or lawyers here at Digital Trends, but it would be malpractice to ever say that The Flash belongs anywhere near the best movies on Netflix. The same goes for Madame Web, the only superhero movie of 2024 that rivals The Flash for lack of quality.

We'll also be the first to admit that another recent arrival, Divergent, isn't necessarily the best that Netflix has to offer. But between this YA sci-fi dystopia and The Flash, we'll go with Divergent every time. However, we're much more enthusiastic about Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, which is a lot better than we ever expected a Pokémon movie to be.

What’s new on Netflix and what’s leaving in June 2024

Sometimes Netflix truly has the best of both worlds, as exemplified by the new arrivals in June. Netflix split Bridgerton season 3 in two so it could save some episodes premiering this month, which only strengths the lineup of originals that also includes the third and final season of Sweet Tooth and Hit Man, the new film starring Glen Powell and Adria Arjona.

But Netflix isn't fully reliant on original content as long as it can grab shows like Dexter and How I Met Your Mother, or films like Crazy Rich Asians and The Lego Batman Movie from other studios. Additionally, the Netflix algorithm is always surprising us by picking an obscure flick that suddenly races to the top of the list of the most popular movies on Netflix. And it's almost impossible to pick which movies will achieve that breakout success.
