PS Plus is getting one of the best sci-fi RPGs ever this month

The February additions to the PlayStation Plus Premium and Essential were unveiled by Sony on Wednesday morning, and it’s a great batch of games for RPG fans. Thirteen games will hit the service on February 20, many of which come from Bandai Namco Entertainment’s Tales Off series. The most exciting addition for me is The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition, which is the complete version of a fantastic sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment.

The Outer Worlds first released for PC, PS4, and Xbox One in October 2019, while Spacer’s Choice Edition gave the RPG a next-gen upgrade in March 2023. It’s a choice-driven sci-fi RPG that takes place in a dystopic spacefaring future where corporations reign supreme. The adventure takes players to colonies in the Halcyon system, where they intervene in various conflicts and make lots of choices that shape the narrative. It’s less ambitious than a game like Starfield, but that gives The Outer Worlds a sense of focus that makes each decision feel more important. Add in some entertaining writing and a lot of leeway for player choices, and you have one of the best RPGs of the past several years.

Although it’s already on Xbox Game Pass because developer Obsidian Entertainment is now owned by Microsoft, RPG fans on PlayStation should still give The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition a shot ahead of its sequel. Here’s the full list of games coming to the PS Plus Premium and Essential Game Catalog on February 20:

  • The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition
  • Need for Speed Unbound
  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
  • Roguebook
  • Rogue Lords
  • Lego Worlds
  • Lego Jurassic World
  • Tales of Arise
  • Tales of Zestiria
  • Tales of Symphonia
  • Tales of Vesperia
  • Resistance Retribution

Several games will also leave the PS Plus Premium and Extra Game Catalog on February 20, including some AAA games from series like Resident Evil and Ace Combat. Here’s the full list of games leaving the subscription service next week:

3 underrated PS Plus games you should play this weekend (May 3-5)
The main character of Tales of Kenzera: Zau stands with two elemental items.

PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra have been around for almost two years, and during that time the subscription service has established itself as an ample competitor to Xbox Game Pass. That means there is a wealth of great games for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 owners to check out if they're looking for something to play this weekend. I think PS Plus subscribers should be looking toward some of the more underrated games in the subscription service this weekend too.

I have three particular picks in mind. The first is an enjoyable Metroidvania that came to PS Plus' game catalog when it launched just a couple of weeks ago and deserves a lot more attention than it's getting. After that, there's an action-platformer that pays homage to series like Ninja Gaiden that you should check out before it leaves the catalog. Finally, there's a PS2-era Star Wars game that fills the niche a recently canceled game would have.

You don’t want to miss PS Plus’ great free game lineup this May
Jack holds a sword in Ghostrunner 2 key art.

A new month is upon us, so another batch of PlayStation Plus Essential's monthly free titles is nearly upon us. On May 7, four games will be available for no additional cost to PS Plus Essential subscribers: EA Sports FC 24, Ghostrunner 2, Tunic, and Destiny 2: Lightfall.

EA Sports FC 24 is the latest soccer game to come from the EA Sports brand. Historically, this series was known as FIFA, but EA had to rebrand it after its partnership with that organization ended. Despite that, EA Sports FC 24 is still very much an iteration of FIFA 23, so if you enjoy soccer games and don't already own EA Sports FC 24, it's worth a download. Next is Ghostrunner II, a thrilling first-person action game that launched last October. It's the kind of game that makes you feel like a badass as you precisely platform and strike enemies before they can kill you in one hit.

Two characters in power armor in Fallout 4.

The Fallout TV series just released on Amazon Prime, and it's one of the best video game adaptations out there. It perfectly captures the tense, humorous feel of the postapocalyptic video game series while telling a new story with original characters. If you've just watched the show, you're probably itching to play a Fallout title again or check out one of the games the series is based on for the first time. Thankfully, if you're subscribed to one of the major video game subscription services, that's very easy to do.

Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout Tactics, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76 are all on at least one gaming subscription service. While PC and Xbox players will be looking to Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation owners can get in on the fun with PS Plus Extra's game catalog. We've combed through what's available on PC Game Pass, Xbox Game Pass, and PS Plus Extra, and there's no shortage of options. Here are the best starting points on each service.
