The MSI Claw just got both faster and cheaper

Compared to some of the best gaming handhelds, the Intel Core Ultra-powered MSI Claw has been behind in terms of overall performance. Interest has faded and it is cheaper at some retailers, but there’s some hope. The latest BIOS updates for the device are improving gameplay, making it significantly faster. Combine that with some recent price cuts, and you’re looking at an increasingly more promising-looking device — at least, in theory.

Noted by MSI in a forum post, the BIOS on the handheld was recently bumped to version E1T41IMS.106, with Intel Graphics moving up yo version 31.0.101.5382. Thanks to these two updates, you can get big performance improvements in select games. Hogwarts Legacy, for example, now runs with rates that are up to 27.6% faster. Forza Horizon 5, meanwhile, runs with 18.4% faster frame rates.

On the other end, F1: 23 is seeing frame rates bumped by as much as 43.5%. Other games like Diablo IV, Deadspace, and Helldivers 2 are getting boosted as well, as shared in the graphic below.

Of course, results may vary based on which configuration of the handheld you have, but the changes are pretty promising and show that, thanks to software updates, this handheld isn’t all too bad. If you own an MSI Claw yourself, you can grab the BIOS update files from MSI’s website, then extract the files and run it as an administrator. As for those Intel drivers, you can grab the update from Live Update in the MSI Center M or manually download it straight from Intel’s website. Make sure you’re connected to power when updating both drivers.

These new drivers and performance improvements come at a time when the MSI Claw is seeing some discounts. A lot of reviewers have slammed the device, with one saying that it is “impossible to recommend.” Others have dismissed it in favor of the Steam Deck OLED or the ROG Ally.

The discounts and graphics updates do give it some promise for those who might want to dip into handheld gaming for the first time. MSI isn’t giving up on the device and is committed to fixing it, making it still worth buying.

Over in the U.K., retailer Currys has the device for nearly 25% off. In the U.S, the discount isn’t as steep, but you can grab it for $649, instead of the usual $700, over at Newegg. We’ll have to wait and see if prices continue to drop across other retailers, but if they do, the MSI Claw may end up being a proper competitor to the best handhelds after all.

Why MSI’s leaked gaming handheld might crush its competitors
The MSI Claw gaming handheld over a colorful background.

That didn't take long. Less than 24 hours after the initial mysterious teaser, MSI's first gaming handheld got leaked in its entirety ahead of its official launch during CES 2024. The handheld, which is set to compete against the likes of the Steam Deck and the Asus ROG Ally, is going to differ from many of its rivals. And it all comes down to the Intel Meteor Lake chip found inside.

Images of the new handheld appeared alongside Geekbench benchmarks earlier today. Dubbed MSI Claw, the portable gaming PC houses the Core Ultra 7 155H chip that comes with a total of 16 cores and 22 threads. That's a major boost over the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme found in handhelds like the Lenovo Legion Go and the Asus ROG Ally. In Intel's case, the cores are split due to the hybrid architecture of the chip, so we're really getting six performance cores, eight efficient cores, and two new low-power cores.

MSI just fixed a massive problem affecting Intel’s best CPUs
Blue screen of death on on TV.

There's some good news if your PC has been struggling with the Blue Screen of Death -- you can stop troubleshooting and simply download a new update from MSI. Following a recent Windows Update, many users started to experience the issue and couldn't even boot up their PCs. The problem was quickly narrowed down to a combination of some of the best Intel processors and MSI motherboards, but now, a fix has been found.

The issue was initially reported last month and started popping up immediately after a new Windows Update has been released. After installing the KB5029351 update, users started getting blue screens with the error code "UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR." Afterward, the PC would attempt to restart, but the blue screen would just pop right back up and make it impossible to boot the computer. Luckily, the update would eventually uninstall itself and the PC would once again be useable, but there was still clearly a problem here.

The situation with melting RTX 4090 connectors just got more complicated
MSI RTX 4090 Suprim X on a pink background.

Nvidia's best GPU continues to melt, and even third-party adapters can't seem to prevent it from happening.  CableMod's adapter, which many had hoped would fix all problems, is now pinned as the cause of some of the instances of melting connectors. Unfortunately, using it voids the warranty on the GPU, as one unlucky user found out from MSI.

Reddit user Agentcamels reported on the MSI subreddit (via Tom's Hardware) that their RTX 4090 went up in smoke. We've heard of this before -- it's a seemingly never-ending saga of melting RTX 4090 connectors. It seems that they were playing Cyberpunk 2077 when they saw smoke. CableMod's 12VHPWR adapter was in use here, and that may have caused the meltdown; in any case, it appears that the adapter is now stuck to the GPU.
