Summer Gaming Marathon Feature Image
This story is part of our Summer Gaming Marathon series.

Sony’s second State of Play presentation of the year just took place. It gave us a clearer look at what we can expect from PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2’s video game lineup throughout the back half of 2024. That includes first-party games like Until Dawn’s remake, Concord, and Astro Bot. Some impressive third-party titles like Dynasty Warriors Origins, Ballard of Antara, and Monster Hunter Wilds also showed up but had 2025 release windows.

If you play a lot of games on your PS5, you definitely won’t want to miss anything that PlayStation Studios or any of its third-party partners revealed over the course of this State of Play. For your convenience, I rounded up every announcement made during this State of Play right here.

Concord finally gets a gameplay debut

Concord - Reveal Cinematic Trailer | PS5 Games

Sony-owned Firewalk Studios first teased the sci-fi multiplayer game Concord during a PlayStation Showcase last year, but we didn’t actually know that much about the game itself. We finally got a better idea about it through another cinematic trailer and gameplay reveal. The cinematic trailer shows some of the main characters fighting each other over a device. We then saw what that’d actually look like in gameplay: a 5v5 first-person hero shooter where the heroes are called Freegunners. It’s certainly reminiscent of games like Overwatch and Lawbreakers. Concord will be released for PC and PS5 on August 23, with a beta taking place in July.

God of War Ragnarok is the next PS5 game to come to PC

The latest in a long string of PC ports, Sony has confirmed that God of War Ragnarok will grace PC on September 19. It looks like it will be the same exact base game and Valhalla experiences that players got on PS4 and PS5, just with all the bells and whistles we’ve seen in recent PS5 to PC ports like the one for Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut. Considering 2018’s God of War is one of Sony’s most successful PC ports, hopefully Ragnarok’s can live up to expectations. God of War Ragnarok hits PC on September 19.

Dynasty Warriors returns with a 10th entry in 2025

DYNASTY WARRIORS: Origins - Announcement Trailer | PS5 Games

Dynasty Warriors is a long-running action game series and the centerpiece of the Musou genre, where players use combos to take out giant hordes of enemies as they take over their bases. That said, it hasn’t seen a new entry since 2018’s Dynasty Warriors 9, as Omega Force has focused on Musou spinoffs like Persona 5: Strikers, Hyrule Warriors, and Samurai Warriors. That’s set to change next year with Dynasty Warriors Origins, a current-gen Musou game that we got a first look at during this State of Play. It sports impressive realistic visuals and horseback combat and will be released sometime in 2025.

Until Dawn comes to PS5 and PC this fall

Until Dawn - Gameplay Trailer | PS5 Games

We finally got another look at the upcoming PS5 and PC remake of the PS4 horror game Until Dawn during this State of Play. It certainly seems like a better-looking version of Supermassive Games’ excellent choice-driven narrative adventure. We also got a more specific release window. The remake of Until Dawn will be launching for PS5 and PC sometime this fall (hopefully around Halloween).

Astro Bot returns this September

ASTRO BOT - Announcement Trailer | PS5 Games

Team Asobi showed up at today’s State of Play to unveil its first game since the excellent PS5 launch title Astro’s Playroom. It’s just called Astro Bot and looks like a full-blown sequel to Playroom with over 50 new levels as well as new abilities like being able to fly with the DualSense or grow large. It also has some boss fights against gigantic creatures. Astro Bot will be released for PS5 on September 6.

Sony just put one final nail in the PlayStation VR2’s coffin

PlayStation VR2 has been murdered. The culprit: Astro Bot.

My favorite announcement of Sony's May 30 State of Play was Astro Bot, a new 3D platformer from Team Asobi that celebrates PlayStation history. It looks incredibly charming and stands out from the typical narrative-action games like Stellar Blade that Sony tends to release these days. That said, my excitement also comes with disappointment as it does not appear that the game will support PlayStation VR2. (Digital Trends reached out to Sony to confirm that was the case but has not gotten a response at the time of publishing this story.)

Hey PlayStation, I’ll take more games like Astro Bot, please

Sony kicked off a marathon of gaming reveals this week with an exciting State of Play stream. The 30-minute broadcast shed some light on what's coming to the PlayStation 5 in the back half of 2024 and beyond. We saw an extended look at Concord, got a release date for Bloober Team's Silent Hill 2 remake, and learned more about Supermassive's Until Dawn remake. But the most exciting announcement of the show wasn't a live-service shooter or a game pushing photorealistic visuals. It was a cute little robot who stole the show.

Astro Bot got the final slot during the State of Play stream -- and for good reason. Sony revealed a delightful trailer for its upcoming platformer that had social media buzzing. Even this morning, you'll find "GOTY" (game of the year) trending on X (formerly Twitter) and posts preemptively crowning Astro Bot as 2024's best game.

Silent Hill 2’s long-awaited remake will arrive just in time for Halloween
The Silent Hill post office shrouded in fog.

The Silent Hill 2 remake from Bloober Team got two new gameplay trailers and a release date announcement at PlayStation's State of Play presentation and a Silent Hill Transmission stream directly after. Fans will be able to return to the town of Silent Hill on October 8 on both PS5 and PC.

The first new trailer highlighted a mix of gameplay and cinematics from the game, primarily focusing on James and Angela. This was the first real look at the new actors and cinematic direction for the game, while gameplay sections were still highly edited. The trailer did show off many of the game's iconic monsters, including nurses and armless figures, as well as a few of the notable locations, such as the hospital and prison.
