ARCHOS’ TV Connect likely to make waves at CES 2013

For much of 2012, we saw over-the-top (OTT) set-top boxes in our sleep, most of which were designed to do essentially the same thing: enlighten your TV. In the case of ARCHOS’ new TV connect box, however, it’s the remote that steals the show.

The box itself runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and adds fully-functional Internet browsing, Android games and apps , and even HD video calling to your TV’s repertoire. But the way you control all of that entertainment is what has us jazzed. TV connect’s remote is an amalgam of anything ever used to control anything. Part TV remote, part keyboard, part Xbox controller and part iPad, the device allows you to click, swipe, type, and tap your way around the Internet with abandon.

Beyond the remote, the HD calling feature is probably the highlight here. Camera integration is a nice feature to have – just make sure you look presentable when video chatting on a 55-inch 1080p TV.

ARCHOS will showcase the TV connect at 2013 International CES next week. The product will retail for just $130 – a tantalizing price point for such a multi-faceted box – and will be available in Feb 2013.

Hisense debuts the UX, its brightest mini-LED TV at CES 2023
Hisense ULED X UX TV.

When it comes to TV technology, Hisense is all-in on mini-LED backlit QLED TVs. The company, which is known for its affordable yet dazzlingly bright TVs, has just revealed its brightest creation yet at CES 2023: the UX, an 85-inch 4K mini-LED QLED TV that is powered by Hisense's new ULED X platform and features more than 20,000 mini-LEDs, which give the UX a claimed peak brightness of 2,500 nits. The company's previous brightest TV, the U8H, had a claimed 1,500 nits but measured closer to 2,000.

That's going to be a very bright display, but Hisense says it can also exert a lot of control over that brightness thanks to more than 5,000 local dimming zones.  “Our engineers were tasked with making the best LED TV available, and they delivered with ULED X,” said David Gold, President of Hisense USA, in an emailed press release.

Samsung debuts world’s smallest and most affordable microLED TV at CES 2023
The Samsung microLED TV mounted on a wall.

While almost all of the buzz in TV land in 2022 was related to the launch of the first-ever QD-OLED TVs from Sony and Samsung, it looks like 2023 will be the year that some folks begin seriously considering a TV based on microLED tech. At least, that's Samsung's clear hope now that the company has debuted the world's first 76-inch model, the Micro LED CX. The company announced the new model at CES 2023 and said it will be its smallest and most affordable microLED TV to date.

The 76-inch model isn't the only microLED in Samsung's lineup. The company says it will offer these TVs in 50-, 63-, 89-, 101-, 114- and 140-inch versions in 2023.

Samsung confirms ultrabright 77-inch QD-OLED panel for CES 2023. Will it be a TV?
Samsung's new 77-inch QD-OLED TV with vibrant picture on screen

Samsung Display has confirmed it will be showing a newly developed 77-inch variant of its QD-OLED panel technology at CES 2023. Whether Samsung Electronics will follow suit with an announcement about a 77-inch QD-OLED TV remains to be seen for now, but I expect to know more within the early days of the show. The new QD-OLED panel has been dubbed "QD-OLED 2023" and the company claims it can exceed 2,000 nits of brightness.

Samsung Display says the impressive new levels of brightness have been achieved through a combination of new panel design -- new "OLED HyperEfficient EL" material which improves the color brightness of each RGB -- and new optimization software dubbed IntelliSense AI.
