T-Mobile’s Lumia 810 won’t be getting a 4G LTE update, at least, not yet

lumia-810-main-2Contrary to reports you may have previously read, or worse, information personally received through a T-Mobile representative, the Nokia 810 will not be getting a software update to enable its 4G LTE connectivity. The news comes just a few days after T-Mobile officially revealed its new Uncarrier contract-free plans, plus the initial switch-on of its 4G LTE network.

Just before the unusual event, T-Mobile began sending out software updates to Samsung Galaxy Note 2 devices registered on its network, enabling the high speed data connection. Some New York-based owners of the Galaxy Note 2 even got a surprise, as the network briefly tested the 4G LTE signal in the city on the day of the launch.

A similar update was widely expected to hit the Nokia 810 soon afterwards, however, unfortunately this won’t be happening. T-Mobile has issued a statement saying, “While the Nokia Lumia 810 features a chipset which provides the hardware capability to support both HSPA+42 and LTE, the device will not automatically access our LTE network, and at this time, it will not receive an update to do so.”

The Nokia Lumia 810 is a variant of the Lumia 820, which uses AT&T’s 4G network, and is a sister device to the Lumia 822, which is Verizon’s 4G LTE version of the phone. At the beginning of February it was noted the FCC approved the Lumia 810 for 4G LTE connectivity with T-Mobile, but a, “confidentiality date” of June 24 was in effect. Perhaps the update , or at the very least, more news on it, will come closer to that time?

For now though, if you want to enjoy T-Mobile’s 4G LTE network you’ll not only need to live in a certain area, but also own the aforementioned Galaxy Note 2, or an iPhone 5. The pair will soon be joined by the BlackBerry Z10, the HTC One and on May 1, the Samsung Galaxy S4.

The T-Mobile logo on a smartphone.

Ookla has just published its latest market report revealing where U.S. mobile carriers and smartphone manufacturers stand in terms of providing the best 5G and 4G/LTE services.

Not surprisingly, T-Mobile remained in the top spot during the fourth quarter of 2022, eclipsing its rivals when it comes to median download speeds. What may be more surprising is that T-Mobile has increased its lead, clocking in at 151.37Mbps overall and 216.56Mbps for 5G, breaking the 200Mbps barrier for median 5G speeds across all bands for the first time.
