Is this the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has always been a leader in automotive tech, so the arrival of a new model is always a cause for celebration and speculation.

Kicking off the latter is this unofficial glimpse at the new-for-2014 S-Class, codenamed W222. The photo was leaked to the French website blogautomobile.

Based on what we can see so far, the S-Class is in for a pretty thorough restyle. The current model’s bulbous curves have been replaced with a larger grille and headlights sporting the now-obligatory LEDs.

The detailing, including a curved strake from the headlights to just above the rear wheel well, brings the S-Class in line with the more evocative styling of the CLA-Class, Concept GLA, and the facelifted 2014 E-Class.

However, what will really set the 2014 S-Class apart is tech. The S-Class has historically been a technological harbinger, introducing features like air bags and traction control that are now commonplace.

We’ve already shown you photos of the 2014 S-Class’ interior, and it is packed with tech, including an iOS-integrated version of Mercedes’ COMAND infotainment system that syncs apps to the car, a 3D Burmester sound system, and an “Air Balance Package” that can dispense perfume.

More information on the 2014 S-Class should trickle out in the coming weeks. The car is scheduled to debut at a private event in Germany, with production to begin in August. Cars will arrive in showrooms by September.

Design
The Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV follows the same overall design language as many of Mercedes' other electric vehicles from the past few years. That's to say, it has the somewhat bulbous nose that can be found on the standard EQS -- a design feature that I'm not a huge fan of. The rest of the car isn't bad-looking, though. As expected, it's a little taller than the standard EQS, with a light bar along the back for the brake lights.
