Blizzard’s ‘Titan’ MMO undergoes ‘large design and technology changes’

Blizzard’s “Titan,” the long-in-development massively multiplayer role-playing game that has nothing to do with World of Warcraft, is set to be torn down and rebuilt, a developer spokesperson confirms to GamesBeat. The studio hasn’t ever actually formally announced the game or spoken of release plans, but there’s been talk of “Titan” since as far back as 2010.

The Blizzard comment came in response to a report from “a source familiar with the matter” that the size of the “Titan” team is pared down now to 30, from 100. The move seems to be motivated by an effort at the studio to hit reset on the unfinished game, a fact further reinforced by Blizzard’s official comment. While no release date was ever set for “Titan,” the unnamed source suggests that the game won’t surface now until 2016 at the earliest.

“We’ve always had a highly iterative development process, and the unannounced MMO is no exception,” the Blizzard statement reads. “We’ve come to a point where we need to make some large design and technology changes to the game. We’re using this opportunity to shift some of our resources to assist with other projects while the core team adapts our technology and tools to accommodate these new changes. Note that we haven’t announced any dates for the MMO.”

To get a better idea of what Spencer's studio visit and BlizzCon appearance felt like for Blizzard developers, we asked John Hight, Warcraft franchise general manager, and Rod Fergusson, Diablo general manager, about the experience.

"They actually came out a couple of weeks ago, Phil and a lot of his leadership team. What was nice about it was we had prepared all of these PowerPoints and stuff, but they just wanted to meet the teams," Hight told Digital Trends. "They had lunch out in our patio, the cafe. We had hundreds of employees and Phil made himself available just to talk to people. He just wanted to see some of the games and meet some of the people, so we gave him a demo of one of the areas in The War Within for a while, and then we had [game designer] Tom [Chilton] demo Warcraft Rumble. It was fun because we started to go through introductions and I said ‘Clearly you’re having fun playing the game, you can tune out and just play that.' They’ve been very supportive. I think they’re excited by the fact that, especially with Warcraft, we have a diversity of games and platforms that we’re building for.”

With this acquisition, Microsoft will now own all the developers under the Activision Blizzard company. That includes the teams at Activision Publishing, Blizzard Entertainment, and King, the latter of which is the developer behind the wildly popular mobile series Candy Crush. The acquisition encompasses the following subsidiaries as well: Treyarch, Infinity Ward, Raven Software, Sledgehammer Games, High Moon Studios, Beenox, Toys for Bob, Activision Shanghai Studio, Solid State Studios, Demonware, Digital Legends, and Major League Gaming. Microsoft now also owns the rights to all of the games and IP Activision Blizzard previously released.
