Double Fine’s new ‘Massive Chalice’ Kickstarter described as XCOM-meets-‘Final Fantasy Tactics’

Double Fine launched a Kickstarter campaign today for a brand new strategy game called Massive Chalice. The game is championed by Iron Brigade creator Brad Muir and described as a blend of XCOM, Final Fantasy TacticsFire Emblem, and Game of Thrones. Double Fine seeks $725,000 in funding, a number that should be achievable given that the total at the time of this writing – on day one of the campaign – is past $150,000.

In Massive Chalice players take on the role of an immortal king training and deploying multiple generations of warriors to fend off a demonic invasion. The game’s story spans hundreds of years, and as characters get old they will weaken and eventually die. You can choose to force them to keep fighting or retire them in the hopes that they’ll settle down with one another and create new generations of mixed-class warriors.

Double Fine is shooting to release the game for Windows, Mac OS, and Linux, but more platforms are a possibility thanks to stretch goals. A pledge of $20 gets backers the game itself, while the highest tier—$10,000—wins a board game night with the developers.

Double Fine kicked off the Kickstarter craze in 2012 when it raised $3,336,371, more than eight times its original goal, for the adventure game that eventually became Broken Age. The as-yet-unreleased game’s development represents only a third of the entire studio.

“Double Fine’s goal is for all our teams to remain independent and responsible directly to their players,” the Kickstarter page explains. “Kickstarting Massive Chalice allows us to maintain a pure creative vision, put out updates on our own schedule, respond to feedback without roadblocks, and release it all DRM-free.”

Ubisoft confirms Assassin’s Creed remakes are in the works
Basim perched on a ledge overlooking Baghdad

In a company interview with CEO Yves Guillemot posted on the Ubisoft website Thursday, the executive reveals that there are remakes of Assassin's Creed games in the works, although he doesn't specify which ones.

"Players can be excited about some remakes, which will allow us to revisit some of the games we've created in the past and modernize them," he says, implying that it could pertain to games made before Odyssey. "There are worlds in some of our older Assassin's Creed games that are still extremely rich."

Surfaced patent shows what an Xbox streaming console would’ve looked like
An Xbox Series X sits next to both Series S models.

There have been a few Xbox devices that have never come to fruition, one of which was Keystone, a prototype for an affordable game streaming device you could hook up to your TV or monitor. Thanks to a surfaced patent, we've gotten an even closer look at what it would've potentially looked like.

The patent, first spotted by Windows Central, gives us a more complete view of the device. We've previously seen the Keystone in the flesh. Microsoft Gaming head Phil Spencer is known for hiding teases and interesting collectibles on the shelf in his office. In a 2022 X (formerly Twitter) post congratulating Bethesda on Fallout's 25th anniversary, you can see a small white device on the top shelf that's actually a Keystone prototype. Xbox told Digital Trends that it was a version of the device made before it decided to "refocus our efforts on a new approach.”
